<\/a>Actor Proposes Casting Anti-Israel Star Melissa Barrera to Replace Gal Gadot in Next \u2018Wonder Woman\u2019 Film<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\nShiryn Ghermezian<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Canadian actor Simu Liu [F\u00f6dd:\u00a0<\/span>19 april 1989 (\u00e5lder 36\u00a0\u00e5r),\u00a0Harbin, Kina<\/a><\/span><\/em> ] said he thinks Mexican actress Melissa Barrera, his costar on \u201cThe Copenhagen Test,\u201d would be a great Wonder Woman to replace Israeli actress Gal Gadot in the upcoming DC Universe film by James Gunn about Diana Prince.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cJames Gunn or anybody else out there, I think she really pushes herself,\u201d said Liu, who starred in Marvel\u2019s \u201cShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,\u201d during a recent\u00a0interview<\/a>\u00a0with JoBlo. \u201cThere were a couple of moments during stunt training where I was like \u2018That\u2019s Wonder Woman-esque.\u2019 I\u2019m just throwing it out there. I don\u2019t know who\u2019s watching or listening to this interview, but I just think she\u2019s a total badass. And she puts in the work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Barrera came under fire in November 2023 for\u00a0sharing posts on social media<\/a>\u00a0that accused Israel of genocide and criticized the Jewish state during its war against Hamas terrorists in the Gaza Strip, following their deadly rampage across southern Israel on Oct. 7 of that year. The actress uploaded posts on Instagram that described Israel as a \u201ccolonized\u201d land and suggested that the Jewish state controls the media. She reshared a post that accused Israel of \u201cgenocide and ethnic cleansing,\u201d and also shared posts from other accounts that featured messages calling for \u201cevery civil institution\u201d to boycott the country. She additionally shared a post that includes claims about manipulating facts related to the Holocaust \u201cto boost the Israeli arms industry,\u201d according to the BBC.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cGaza is currently being treated like a concentration camp,\u201d Barrera wrote in one post on her Instagram Story in 2023. \u201cCornering everyone together, with no where to go, no electricity no water \u2026 People have learnt nothing from our histories. And just like our histories, people are still silently watching it all happen. THIS IS GENOCIDE & ETHNIC CLEANSING [sic].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Barrera\u00a0was fired<\/a>\u00a0from the film \u201cScream 7\u201d following her social media posts against Israel. In a statement to\u00a0Variety<\/em>\u00a0magazine, a spokesman for the movie\u2019s production company Spyglass said its stance was \u201cunequivocally clear.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion, or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech,\u201d the statement noted.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Hours after her firing was announced, Barrera shared a statement on Instagram claiming that she condemns antisemitism and Islamophobia, and all forms of hate and prejudice.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cEvery person on this earth \u2026 deserves equal human rights, dignity and, of course, freedom,\u201d she added. \u201cI believe a group of people are NOT their leadership, and that no governing body should be above criticism. I pray day and night for no more deaths, for no more violence, and for peaceful co-existence. I will continue to speak out for those that need it most and continue to advocate for peace and safety, for human rights and freedom. Silence is not an option for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Barrera and Liu were among the many celebrities who signed an\u00a0open letter<\/a>\u00a0by Artists4Ceasefire in October 2023 that called for an immediate ceasefire to end the Israel-Hamas war, a release of the hostages taken by the terrorist organization after its invasion of Israel on Oct. 7, and an end to \u201cthe bombing in Gaza.\u201d The letter makes no mention of the Hamas terrorist organization by name, which slaughtered 1,200 Israelis, took more than 200 civilian hostages from Israel. and led to the start of the Israel-Hamas war.<\/span><\/p>\n A new DCU film about Wonder Woman is currently in development and it will feature a new lead actress to replace Gadot. The Israeli actress starred in two solo films as the Amazonian superhero: \u201cWonder Woman\u201d in 2017 and \u201cWonder Woman 1984\u201d in 2020. A director has yet to be hired for the next Wonder Woman movie, but its screenwriter will be Ana Nogueira.\u00a0Gadot first appeared as Wonder Woman in 2016\u2019s \u201cBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.\u201d She also played the character in 2017\u2019s \u201cJustice League\u201d and Zack Snyder\u2019s \u201cJustice League\u201d in 2021, and made brief cameos in \u201cShazam!\u00a0Fury of the Gods\u201d and \u201cThe Flash,\u201d both in 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n Liu is not the first to nominate Barrera as the next Wonder Woman.
