Classes begin Jan. 12.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Alff signed&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/palestineandpraxis.weebly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/palestineandpraxis.weebly.com\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1767673334284000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3PSSHDDlsuWuLqMgW0HIHa\">Palestine and Praxis: Open Letter and Call to Action<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014using her \u201cNC State University\u201d&nbsp;<a class=\"fancybox image\" style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/voice4israel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Alff-Praxis-1.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voice4israel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Alff-Praxis-1.png&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1767673334284000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2YXE7owCL-XVbhQeVUu43y\" aria-controls=\"fancybox-wrap\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\">credentials<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 which characterized Israel as a \u201csettler colonial state.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The letter affirmed, \u201cIn the classroom and on campus, we commit to pressuring our academic institutions and organizations to respect the Palestinian call for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions [BDS] of Israel by instating measures that remove complicity and partnership with military, academic, and legal institutions involved in entrenching Israel\u2019s policies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Alff also signed a \u201cStatement on Palestine from North Carolina Academics,\u201d which&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jadaliyya.com\/Details\/42794\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.jadaliyya.com\/Details\/42794&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1767673334284000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2-GCBFl31egFQaxpjKSh33\">said<\/a>, \u201cWe acknowledge our complicity in Israel\u2019s oppression of the Palestinians\u201d and \u201c[We] reject the prevalent \u2018two-sides\u2019 narrative.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">NC State is a public university and part of the University of North Carolina (UNC) System. It is required by&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncleg.net\/EnactedLegislation\/Statutes\/HTML\/ByArticle\/Chapter_116\/Article_36.html?fbclid=IwAR3WVeZEvSnx28Mqur_djncn9tsUaxAu5aZLWU_no7NOuxJIMSgQcJ5WCNI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.ncleg.net\/EnactedLegislation\/Statutes\/HTML\/ByArticle\/Chapter_116\/Article_36.html?fbclid%3DIwAR3WVeZEvSnx28Mqur_djncn9tsUaxAu5aZLWU_no7NOuxJIMSgQcJ5WCNI&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1767673334284000&amp;usg=AOvVaw30eQoOAPiEZcVrnh5h6X8e\">State law<\/a>&nbsp;and the UNC&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.northcarolina.edu\/apps\/policy\/doc.php?id=147\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.northcarolina.edu\/apps\/policy\/doc.php?id%3D147&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1767673334284000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1Bl-8-1RTDd0OgaZveFUP8\">equality policy<\/a>&nbsp;to be institutionally neutral \u201con the political controversies of the day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What rationale could NC State possibly have for selecting an instructor who has signed a letter that publicly pledged to advocate for BDS against Israel, \u201cin the classroom and on campus,\u201d to teach a course focused on Israel?<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">I reached out to Dean Deanna Dannels, copying her executive assistant, inquiring, \u201cDo you have any concerns about institutional neutrality and this course?\u201d I received an automatic \u201cout of office\u201d reply. Additionally, I received an \u201cout of office\u201d message from Traci Brynne Voyles, who is Head of the History Department.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In late December, I asked Alff, \u201cDo you use your classroom at a North Carolina public university to advocate for BDS?\u201d She responded, \u201cI absolutely do not advocate for BSD [sic] in my classroom nor at the university level.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">I asked why she signed the BDS pledge. Alff responded, \u201cI anticipate my students\u2019 thinking to change throughout the semester and their lives. I too am open and change my mind over time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">I then asked if she was planning to request her name be removed as a signatory from the BDS pledge. Alff did not respond, and her name continues to be included as a signatory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">NC State philosophy student PJ Shaw told me, \u201cThe most harmful way for antisemitism and anti-Israel sentiment to be spread is in the classroom. Because, if it is coming through a professor, it is perceived to be the most reputable path.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Shaw suggested how the university should respond: \u201cIt shouldn\u2019t be a \u2018wait and see how she does\u2019 situation. It should be a red flag immediately and the school should say, \u2018OK, even if you think you can do a neutral job with this, we\u2019re going to find someone else who hasn\u2019t publicly signed a [BDS] pledge.&#8217;\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">On Dec. 2, the university&nbsp;<a class=\"fancybox image\" style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/voice4israel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/public-records-request-Reitzes-NC-State-class.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voice4israel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/public-records-request-Reitzes-NC-State-class.png&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1767673334284000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3XkOOjhDaRyz0_fqI7mf97\" aria-controls=\"fancybox-wrap\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\">denied<\/a>&nbsp;my public records request for Alff\u2019s syllabus, stating, \u201cNC State University considers syllabi to be the intellectual property of our faculty members and protected from disclosure under federal copyright law.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">On Dec. 19, the UNC System issued a&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.northcarolina.edu\/apps\/policy\/doc.php?id=3559\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.northcarolina.edu\/apps\/policy\/doc.php?id%3D3559&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1767673334284000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3bBPDVwVVRJy4de8QkU7aR\">new syllabi policy<\/a>&nbsp;that will take effect in the 2026-27 academic year, following the completion of Alff\u2019s course.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">It mandates that instructors include a \u201clist of all course materials (physical and\/or electronic) that students are required to purchase\u201d on their publicly available syllabus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">However, many instructors depend on free course materials that can be accessed at no cost through the university. This new policy will permit instructors to have one version of their syllabus for students and a second, redacted version, for the public. This is ridiculous and will continue to allow instructors to hide the content of their courses, biases, and radicalism from the public.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Let\u2019s examine a syllabus from 2021 to further understand how little UNC\u2019s new syllabi policy will help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In 2021, I&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2021\/08\/03\/more-anti-israel-hatred-infests-the-university-of-north-carolina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2021\/08\/03\/more-anti-israel-hatred-infests-the-university-of-north-carolina\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1767673334284000&amp;usg=AOvVaw13R66KMlyH9KVCz9cGB8t7\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;that UNC-Chapel Hill\u2019s recurring course, \u201cThe Conflict over Israel\/Palestine,\u201d was being taught by Kylie Broderick, even though she publicly&nbsp;<a class=\"fancybox image\" style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/voice4israel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Broderick-all-of-Israel-is-occupied-.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voice4israel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Broderick-all-of-Israel-is-occupied-.png&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1767673334284000&amp;usg=AOvVaw29hJmHP2N3c8oQbTa8UF73\" aria-controls=\"fancybox-wrap\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\">promoted<\/a>&nbsp;the view that Israel should not exist. At the end of teaching the course, she publicly&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DQqDwtEy_TQ&amp;t=3293s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v%3DDQqDwtEy_TQ%26t%3D3293s&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1767673334284000&amp;usg=AOvVaw13lA3Bx-GlfFUaeYtFOFTL\">said<\/a>, \u201cThe notion of objectivity is a tool of colonizers and one that we must completely reject.\u201d Broderick also&nbsp;<a class=\"fancybox image\" style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/voice4israel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Broderick-BDS-scaled.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voice4israel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Broderick-BDS-scaled.png&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1767673334284000&amp;usg=AOvVaw11CoAMPzYbdOYFrQju84pu\" aria-controls=\"fancybox-wrap\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\">signed<\/a>&nbsp;the BDS pledge and later became known for tweeting \u201c<a class=\"fancybox image\" style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/voice4israel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Fuck-Israel.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voice4israel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Fuck-Israel.png&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1767673334284000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2xBJHL0xhf_l7CpYNw3V0A\" aria-controls=\"fancybox-wrap\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\">F\u2014k Israel<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">I was leaked a copy of Broderick\u2019s&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/voice4israel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/277-Final-Syllabus.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voice4israel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/277-Final-Syllabus.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1767673334284000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1zX1971pBlLL9C3iFulLPK\">syllabus<\/a>&nbsp;which I&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2021\/08\/30\/despite-antisemitic-syllabus-unc-wont-back-down-on-anti-israel-instructor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2021\/08\/30\/despite-antisemitic-syllabus-unc-wont-back-down-on-anti-israel-instructor\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1767673334284000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3hhMWiejT7BhETiUuKkfWZ\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;on extensively at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">I do not see a single assigned reading or podcast on Broderick\u2019s 2021 syllabus that indicates it is a required purchase. Under the new UNC syllabi policy, a significant number, if not all, of the materials assigned by Broderick could have been redacted from the publicly accessible version of her syllabus because they did not require a purchase.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">I contacted UNC System President Peter Hans about the new syllabi policy he&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theassemblync.com\/news\/education\/higher-education\/unc-system-issues-policy-making-syllabi-public\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.theassemblync.com\/news\/education\/higher-education\/unc-system-issues-policy-making-syllabi-public\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1767673334284000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0jL_ov_dXzkaHJc9SIcWgW\">issued<\/a>. He did not respond. The James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal wrote to Hans,&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/jamesgmartin.center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Hans-Letter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/jamesgmartin.center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Hans-Letter.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1767673334284000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0juWs98MFIjPSaTbvjpibl\">suggesting<\/a>&nbsp;the new syllabi policy be changed to include \u201call required readings and materials, regardless of cost.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The UNC System has lost the public trust by disregarding institutional neutrality and choosing radical anti-Israel instructors to teach courses about Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">It is essential now for the North Carolina General Assembly to intervene and pass a simple bill requiring that all course syllabi be made publicly available without omissions or redactions.
