Photo: REUTERS\/Toby Melville<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">China on Monday expressed hope that the Iranian regime would \u201covercome\u201d the current\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2026\/01\/12\/trump-weighs-response-iran-crackdown-tehran-says-communication-open-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anti-government protests sweeping the country<\/a>, warning against foreign \u201cinterference\u201d as US President Donald Trump considered how to respond to Iran\u2019s deadly crackdown on nationwide protests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cChina hopes the Iranian government and people will overcome the current difficulties and uphold stability in the country,\u201d Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told reporters during a press conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cChina always opposes interference in other countries\u2019 internal affairs, advocates that all countries\u2019 sovereignty and security should be fully protected by international law, and opposes the use or threat of force in international relations,\u201d she continued. \u201cWe call on parties to act in ways conducive to peace and stability in the Middle East.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The comments came as\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2026\/01\/09\/iran-shuts-off-internet-anti-regime-protests-intensify-across-country\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Iran continued to face fierce demonstrations<\/a>, which began on Dec. 28 over economic hardships but escalated into large-scale protests calling for the downfall of the country\u2019s Islamist regime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">If the regime in Tehran was seriously weakened or potentially collapsed, it would present a problem for a strategic partner of Beijing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">China, a key diplomatic and economic backer of Tehran, has moved to deepen ties with the regime in recent years, signing a 25-year cooperation agreement,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/03\/12\/irans-growing-military-ties-china-russia-present-danger-us-israeli-security-experts-warn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">holding joint naval drills<\/a>, and continuing to purchase Iranian oil despite US sanctions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">China is the largest importer of Iranian oil, with nearly 90 percent of Iran\u2019s crude and condensate exports going to Beijing. Traders and analysts have said that Chinese reliance on Iranian oil will likely increase and replace Venezuelan oil after US forces captured Venezuela\u2019s President Nicolas Maduro earlier this month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Iran\u2019s\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/09\/25\/iran-china-russia-pledge-coordinated-action-european-efforts-reinstate-un-sanctions-tehran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">growing ties with China<\/a>\u00a0come at a time when Tehran faces mounting economic sanctions from Western powers, while Beijing itself is also under US sanctions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to some media reports, China may be even helping Iran rebuild its decimated air defenses following the 12-day war with Israel in June.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The extent of China\u2019s partnership with Iran may be tested as the latter comes under\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2026\/01\/09\/irans-leadership-draws-up-contingency-escape-plans-widespread-anti-government-protests-reports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increased international scrutiny<\/a>\u00a0over its violent crackdown on anti-regime protests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">US-based rights group HRANA said by late Monday it had verified the deaths of 646 people, including 505 protesters, 113 military and security personnel, and seven bystanders. The group added that it was investigating 579 more reported deaths and that, since the demonstrations began,10,721 people have been arrested.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Other reports indicated the number of protesters killed by the regime numbers were well into the thousands, but with the regime imposing an internet blackout since Thursday, verification has been difficult.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Trump has said\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2026\/01\/02\/trump-says-us-intervene-iran-kills-protesters-regime-crackdown-locked-loaded\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he will intervene against the regime<\/a>\u00a0if security forces continue killing protesters.
