Then signs appeared across the city. Later, posters were hung on public buildings with slogans,\u201d the Jewish Community of Barcelona said in a statement. \u201cAfter that, a map was published marking Jewish targets, including a school. And now, the desecration of graves. This is not random. This is an escalation. From slogans to marking. From marking to threats. And from threats to action.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The statement referred to an\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2026\/01\/02\/jewish-community-spain-condemns-online-map-labeling-schools-businesses-zionist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online platform mapping Jewish-owned businesses<\/a>, schools, and Israeli-linked companies in Catalonia, a region in northeastern Spain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A spokesperson for the Catalan police told Agence France Presse that \u201cwe are aware of the [cemetery] incident and have opened an investigation,\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The European Jewish Congress (EJC)\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/eurojewcong\/status\/2015415231707803747?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">condemned the vandalism<\/a>\u00a0on X.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWhat we are seeing is not isolated. It is part of a wider escalation that begins with words, continues with targeting and intimidation and ends in acts like this,\u201d the EJC said. \u201cWhen hate is normalized in public discourse, the step to physical action becomes smaller.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israel\u2019s Foreign Ministry also\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/IsraelMFA\/status\/2015393412178989399?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released a statement<\/a>\u00a0with photos of the crime, saying, \u201cW<span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">e condemn the vandalism of the Jewish cemetery in Barcelona. This despicable act is a result of the anti-Israel campaign by the S\u00e1nchez government. We stand with Spain\u2019s Jewish community. Antisemitism must never be normalized and must be firmly rejected in all societies.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In September, Lorenzo Rodr\u00edguez, mayor of Castrillo Mota de Jud\u00edos in northern Spain, warned that Spanish Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez had fueled antisemitic sentiment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/09\/16\/spains-pm-sanchez-faces-backlash-fueling-anti-israel-hostility-amid-surge-antisemitic-incidents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">government is fostering antisemitism<\/a>\u00a0that will prove deeply damaging for Spain,\u201d Rodr\u00edguez said. \u201cS\u00e1nchez\u2019s moves are less about serious foreign policy and more about deflecting attention from his trials and failures in governance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Rodr\u00edguez described his view that Spain \u201cisn\u2019t leading anything \u2014 it\u2019s merely whitewashing Hamas and other terrorist groups.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">S\u00e1nchez had told members of his Socialist Workers\u2019 Party that month that Israel should not be allowed to participate in international sports and that the Jewish state \u201ccannot continue to use any international platform to whitewash its image.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Spain\u2019s Culture Minister Ernest Urtasun has expressed similar calls for boycotting Israel, saying, \u201cWe have to make sure that Israel does not take part in the next Eurovision,\u201d referring to the international song contest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Madrid has been one of the West\u2019s\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/09\/11\/spain-pm-claims-spain-cant-intervene-in-gaza-war-without-nuclear-weapons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fiercest critics of Israel\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0defensive military campaign in Gaza following Hamas\u2019s Oct. 7, 2023, invasion of and massacre across southern Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWhat [Israeli] Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu presented in October 2023 as a military operation in response to the horrific terrorist attacks has ended up becoming a new wave of illegal occupations and an unjustifiable attack against the Palestinian civilian population \u2013 an attack that the UN special rapporteur and the majority of experts already describe as a genocide,\u201d S\u00e1nchez said in a televised speech last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The diplomatic tension between the two nations reached a boiling point in September, when\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/09\/08\/spain-recalls-ambassador-israel-jerusalem-accuses-sanchez-government-antisemitism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Madrid recalled its ambassador<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The American Jewish Committee (AJC)\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.org\/news\/five-things-to-know-about-antisemitism-in-spain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">describes<\/a>\u00a0Barcelona as notable for its anti-Israel sentiment, characterizing its position as an \u201coutlier status.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The AJC wrote in May 2023 that in February of that year, \u201c<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AJCGlobal\/status\/1623445320150695938?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau<\/a>\u00a0announced that Spain\u2019s second-largest city would<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AJCGlobal\/status\/1613248726470135809?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0sever ties with its twin city Tel Aviv<\/a>.
