<\/a>Iran Hardens Stance Ahead of US Nuclear Talks, Rejects Uranium Transfers and Ballistic Missile Limitations<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h5>\nAilin Vilches Arguello<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n A top adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei signaled that Iran has hardened its negotiating stance ahead of\u00a0renewed nuclear talks with the United States<\/a>, publicly rejecting any transfer of uranium out of the country and refusing to negotiate over ballistic missiles or terrorist proxy forces.<\/span><\/p>\n The latest comments from Admiral Ali Shamkhani, a senior official on Iran\u2019s Supreme National Defense Council, came as tensions continued to rise between the US and Iran over a potential military escalation in the Middle East.<\/span><\/p>\n In an interview with the Lebanese news outlet Al Mayadeen published on Monday, Shamkhani insisted that\u00a0Iran\u2019s nuclear program<\/a>\u00a0is \u201cpeaceful and within local capabilities,\u201d while firmly reiterating nonnegotiable conditions for any resumption of talks with Washington.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIran neither seeks nor will ever seek nuclear weapons or stockpile them, but the other side must pay a price in return for this commitment,\u201d Shamkhani said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cEnrichment at 60 percent can be rolled back to 20 percent if there are concerns, but only if the other side offers something in return,\u201d he continued.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The senior Iranian official also rejected media reports suggesting Tehran might transfer its stored enriched uranium abroad, including to Russia, saying, \u201cThere is no reason to move the stored material out\u201d of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n This week, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi are\u00a0scheduled to meet<\/a>\u00a0with representatives from several Arab and Muslim countries, as they push forward\u00a0renewed efforts to restart nuclear negotiations.<\/span><\/p>\n Set to take place on Friday, the high-level meeting would mark the first direct engagement between US and Iranian officials since nuclear talks collapsed after last June\u2019s 12-day war, during which the US and Israel bombed Iran\u2019s nuclear facilities.<\/span><\/p>\n The potential restart of negotiations comes as Iran faces growing international pressure over its\u00a0violent crackdown on anti-government protests<\/a>, with the US escalating a massive military buildup in the region and repeatedly threatening the Islamist regime.<\/span><\/p>\n Just days ahead of the talks, the Iranian government has reportedly imposed new demands that retract previously agreed terms, including relocating negotiations from Istanbul to Oman and limiting them to a strictly bilateral format with Washington, threatening to destabilize an already fragile process, according to a report from Axios.<\/span><\/p>\n Cautious optimism about diplomacy has also been shaken by reported clashes between US and Iranian forces at sea.<\/span><\/p>\n The US military said on Tuesday that\u00a0it shot\u00a0down\u00a0<\/span>an\u00a0Iranian\u00a0<\/span><\/a>drone\u00a0<\/span>that \u201caggressively\u201d approached the Abraham Lincoln\u00a0aircraft\u00a0<\/span>carrier\u00a0<\/span>in the Arabian Sea. Hours later, Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces harassed a US-flagged, US-crewed merchant vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.<\/span><\/p>\n In his Monday interview, Shamkhani said that if the White House seeks a mutual understanding, diplomatic talks should take place \u201caway from atmospheres of threats and coercion,\u201d with both sides having \u201cequal standing at the negotiating table\u201d and avoiding \u201cillogical and unreasonable demands.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIran has repeatedly affirmed its readiness to hold practical negotiations exclusively with the United States, and not with any other party,\u201d Shamkhani told\u00a0Al Mayadeen.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe negotiations are strictly limited to the United States and the nuclear file, where a mutual agreement is possible,\u201d he continued. \u201cIf their proposals are free of threats, based on logical conditions, and avoid arrogance, there is hope to prevent an unjustified catastrophe or incident.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n However, US President Donald Trump had reportedly demanded three conditions for resumption of\u00a0talks<\/span>: zero enrichment of uranium in\u00a0Iran<\/span>, limits on Iran\u2019s ballistic missile program, and ending the regime\u2019s support for terrorist groups and other proxies across the Middle East.<\/span><\/p>\n Iran\u00a0<\/span>has\u00a0long\u00a0<\/span>said all three demands are unacceptable, but two\u00a0Iran<\/span>ian officials told Reuters its Islamist, authoritarian rulers view the ballistic missile program, not uranium enrichment, as the bigger issue.<\/span><\/p>\n In the last few weeks, Trump has repeatedly warned that he may take \u201cdecisive\u201d military action against Iran if the regime continues killing protesters and refuses to return to the negotiating table.<\/span><\/p>\n Amid rising regional tensions, Washington has\u00a0significantly increased its military presence<\/a>\u00a0in the region, moving a range of assets into the area \u2014 including the USS Abraham Lincoln and its strike group.<\/span><\/p>\n Echoing past comments from Iranian officials, Shamkhani said the country is \u201cprepared for any circumstances that may arise,\u201d emphasizing the regime\u2019s readiness to confront both diplomatic pressures and potential military threats.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe are essentially living in warlike conditions,\u201d he said. \u201cThe Americans are in the region to defend Israel, while Iran serves as the force that restrains Israel and curbs its bullying and arrogance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe assumption that the United States would act without Israel\u2019s involvement is entirely wrong,\u201d he continued. \u201cShould the US strike, Israel will be inevitably involved and will face an appropriate response.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The Iranian official warned that any attack on Khamenei, \u201cno matter how small, would escalate into a colossal crisis far beyond what others can imagine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Iranian lawmakers last month similarly\u00a0warned that any attack on Khamenei<\/a>\u00a0would lead to a declaration of \u201cjihad,\u201d or holy war, and a violent global response from the Islamic world.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe will continue on this path,\u201d Shamkhani said. \u201cWe will not allow them [the US and its allies] to make the region unsafe or force us into a situation we do not choose.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIran will persist in its policies and continue supporting the path of resistance, including resistance groups in Palestine, Lebanon, and beyond,\u201d he continued.<\/span><\/p>\n A common slogan of the Iranian protesters has been \u201cNeither Gaza\u00a0nor\u00a0Lebanon, my\u00a0life for Iran,\u201d with large swathes of the population opposing the regime\u2019s commitment to spending billions of dollars to support terrorist groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah.<\/span><\/p>\n Zawarto\u015b\u0107 publikowanych artyku\u0142\u00f3w i materia\u0142\u00f3w nie reprezentuje pogl\u0105d\u00f3w ani opinii Reunion’68,<\/em> Iran Hardens Stance Ahead of US Nuclear Talks, Rejects Uranium Transfers and Ballistic Missile Limitations Ailin Vilches Arguello Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei speaks during a meeting in Tehran, Iran, Jan. 3, 2026.
