Photo: Hussam Alastal\/via REUTERS<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Anti-Hamas militias across Gaza appear to be taking concrete, coordinated steps to disrupt the ruling terrorist group, carrying out targeted attacks and expanding their operations\u00a0in a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/12\/11\/anti-hamas-militias-vow-continue-fight-gaza-israel-stands-firm-disarmament-turkeys-post-war-role\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bid to weaken Hamas\u2019s hold on the territory<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">This past weekend, the Popular Forces armed group captured Hamas commander Adham al-Akar in Israeli-held Rafah, in southern Gaza, as militia forces ramp up efforts to curb the Islamist group\u2019s influence and prevent it from regaining control in the war-torn enclave.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In a social media video released after the operation, militia leader Ghassan al-Duhaini is seen with Akar, sending a warning to the Palestinian terrorist group that its fighters will be \u201cpunished like the victims of the Spanish Inquisition.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Following a successful operation in southern Gaza, the Popular Forces handed Akar over to Israeli authorities, the Israeli broadcaster\u00a0Kan News\u00a0reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to Joe Truzman, senior research analyst at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD), a Washington, DC-based think tank, this latest development adds to growing evidence that\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/12\/05\/hamas-braces-israeli-operations-abroad-continued-clan-opposition-gaza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">militia forces are carrying out offensive operations<\/a>\u00a0against Hamas while seeking to expand their influence in the territory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIt\u2019s only in the past few months that we\u2019ve started to observe these militias actively carrying out attacks against Hamas,\u201d Truzman told\u00a0<i>The Algemeiner<\/i>. \u201cWe\u2019re seeing increasing evidence that they are actively going after Hamas, targeting both members and senior leadership with some success.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Last month, Hussam al-Astal, leader of the Counterterrorism Strike Force \u2013 another prominent anti-Hamas militia based in Khan Younis, a city in southern Gaza \u2013 claimed responsibility for killing Mahmoud al-Astal, head of the city\u2019s criminal police unit and a senior Hamas member.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The group also took responsibility for an offensive operation in the Abu al-Saber area of Shaboura Camp in Rafah, which left two Hamas members dead and a third in custody.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Even with notable successes against the Palestinian terrorist group, Truzman warned that these militia forces could face significant strategic challenges in the near future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cMy concern is how they will do beyond their current areas of operation. So far, I haven\u2019t seen any indication that these militias are entering Hamas-controlled territory,\u201d Truzman told\u00a0<i>The Algemeiner<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cAt the end of the day, they are making progress, but will it be enough to bring down Hamas? Not in this way,\u201d he continued. \u201cThey need much more support \u2014 money, weapons, and fighters \u2014 to make a real impact against Hamas. I\u2019m skeptical, but I do see that they are making progress.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">With the region preparing to implement\u00a0the second phase of\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2026\/01\/29\/hamas-doubles-down-refusal-disarm-trump-pushes-phase-two-gaza-peace-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US President Donald Trump\u2019s Gaza peace plan<\/a>, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will be expected to withdraw slowly from its current positions if Hamas fulfills its obligations to disarm \u2014 a step the terrorist group has repeatedly refused to take.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Truzman argued that such Israeli pullbacks would leave anti-Hamas militias \u2014 currently operating in Israeli-controlled areas \u2014 at a strategic disadvantage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIn my opinion, these militias are able to survive because they operate under the IDF\u2019s protection, either directly or indirectly,\u201d Truzman told\u00a0<i>The Algemeiner<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Under Trump\u2019s 20-point Gaza peace plan, a multinational peacekeeping force \u2014 the International Stabilization Force (ISF) \u2014 is supposed to oversee security in Gaza and replace the IDF\u2019s current role once it forms. However, Truzman warned that this force will not be focused on supporting the anti-Hamas militias, ultimately undermining their position and leaving them more vulnerable to the terrorist group\u2019s violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe situation will allow Hamas and its allies the freedom to operate in territory where they were previously restricted by the ceasefire agreement and the presence of the IDF,\u201d Truzman said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThis gives Hamas and other terror groups the advantage they need to go after these militias,\u201d he continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">However, the analyst also expressed skepticism about how the Israel-Hamas ceasefire will play out, noting that much depends on Hamas\u2019s disarmament, which is crucial for the militias and their protection against attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI don\u2019t think Hamas will give up its arms in any meaningful way,\u201d Truzman told\u00a0<i>The Algemeiner<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cAnd if they don\u2019t, the IDF could end up staying in their current positions, which would actually benefit these militias by giving them the cover they need to continue fighting Hamas,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Some experts have even suggested the possibility of these groups joining the ISF in a post-war Gaza scenario, integrating them into the force and potentially giving them the protection they need against Hamas and its\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/10\/30\/new-gaza-rises-anti-hamas-militias-backed-israel-claim-local-rule-vow-fight-qatar-turkey-iran-forces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brutal crackdown on dissent<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Even with an uncertain future, anti-Hamas militias across the enclave have recently intensified their offensive operations, shifting their approach with new tactics to fight the Islamist group, including targeting officers in Hamas\u2019s security services and members of its armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, near their homes, according to a report by Saudi outlet\u00a0<i>Asharq Al-Awsat<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In response, Hamas has reportedly increased alert levels and tightened personal security, warning members to remain vigilant, vary their routes, minimize phone use to avoid tracking, and be on the lookout for potential surveillance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Shortly after the US-backed ceasefire to halt fighting in Gaza took effect last year,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/10\/13\/hamas-clashes-rivals-targets-prominent-families-gaza-power-struggle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hamas moved to reassert control over the war-torn enclave<\/a>\u00a0and consolidate its weakened position by targeting Palestinians who it labeled as \u201clawbreakers and collaborators with Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Since then, Hamas\u2019s bloody crackdown has escalated dramatically, sparking widespread clashes and violence as the group moves to seize weapons and eliminate any opposition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Social media videos widely circulated online have shown Hamas members brutally beating Palestinians and carrying out public executions of alleged collaborators and rival militia members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">As they continue to come under attack, both the Popular Forces and the Counterterrorism Strike Force vowed to unite against the Islamist group, emphasizing that both had \u201cagreed the war on terror will continue.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr style=\"height: 15px;
