<\/a>Somalia Warns Israel Against Military Base in Somaliland, Signs Defense Pact With Saudi Arabia<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\nAilin Vilches Arguello<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Somalia\u2019s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has warned Israel against establishing a military base in the self-declared Republic of\u00a0Somaliland, as Mogadishu bolsters strategic ties with Middle Eastern states amid mounting regional tensions.<\/span><\/p>\n At the\u00a0Al Jazeera\u00a0Forum in Doha on Saturday, Mohamud sounded the alarm over a potential Israeli military foothold in the Horn of Africa, while once again condemning\u00a0Israel\u2019s recognition of Somaliland<\/a>\u00a0as a \u201cblatant breach of international law.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Somaliland, which\u00a0has\u00a0<\/span>claimed independence for decades in East Africa but remains largely\u00a0unrecognized, is situated on the southern coast of the Gulf of Aden and bordered by Djibouti to the northwest, Ethiopia to the south and west, and Somalia to the south and east.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n During Saturday\u2019s event, Mohamud insisted that an Israeli military base in Somaliland would offer no real defensive benefit and would primarily serve as a springboard for foreign interventions.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cA base is not a tourist destination \u2014 it is a military facility, and military means either attack or defense,\u201d he said during a speech. \u201cThere is no part of Somalia that Israel has any need to defend.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe will fight to the full extent of our capacity,\u201d Mohamud continued. \u201cWe will confront any Israeli forces that enter, because we oppose this and will never allow it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n For years now, Somalia has hosted military facilities for foreign powers, including Turkey and Egypt.<\/span><\/p>\n Mohamud\u2019s remarks came after Israel last year became the first country to\u00a0officially recognize the Republic of Somaliland<\/a>\u00a0as an independent and sovereign state \u2014 a move expected to reshape regional power dynamics as the two governments deepen political, security, and economic cooperation.<\/span><\/p>\n At the time, regional powers \u2014 including Egypt and Turkey \u2014 condemned Israel\u2019s diplomatic move, saying it undermined Somalia\u2019s sovereignty and territorial integrity.<\/span><\/p>\n According to experts, the growing Israel-Somaliland partnership\u00a0could be a \u201cgame changer\u201d for Israel<\/a>, boosting the Jewish state\u2019s ability to counter the Yemen-based Houthi terrorist group while offering strategic and geographic advantages amid shifting regional power dynamics.<\/span><\/p>\n Unlike most other states in the region, Somaliland has relative security, regular elections, and a degree of political stability \u2014 qualities that make it a\u00a0valuable partner for international allies<\/a>\u00a0and a key player in regional cooperation.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIsrael\u2019s interference in Somalia\u2019s sovereignty will not be tolerated,\u201d Mohamud said during his speech. \u201cThe African continent rejects any attempts to change borders through military force or unilateral actions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n In a move to strengthen its defense capabilities amid increasing regional instability, Somalia signed a defense cooperation pact with Saudi Arabia on Monday, aimed at enhancing military ties and providing advanced technology and training for the Somali National Army.<\/span><\/p>\n According to officials from both countries, the deal is intended to safeguard the Red Sea, a strategic corridor between the Indian Ocean and the Suez Canal that has increasingly drawn the attention of Gulf states.<\/span><\/p>\n Even though the newly signed memorandum is not a mutual defense treaty, Somali officials say it sets the stage for deeper military cooperation \u2014 a move analysts say has gained momentum following\u00a0Israel\u2019s
