<\/a>Protesters at \u2018Scream 7\u2019 Premiere Call for Film\u2019s Boycott After Former Lead Star Fired for Antisemitic Posts<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\nShiryn Ghermezian Protesters demonstrated<\/a> outside the \u201cScream 7\u201d premiere at Paramount Pictures Studios in Los Angeles on Wednesday night to call for the film\u2019s boycott after its former lead star, Melissa Barrera, was fired in 2023 for posting antisemitic and anti-Israel messages on social media.<\/span><\/p>\n The protesters, who were supporters of groups including Entertainment Labor for Palestine and Musicians for Palestine, waved Palestinian flags and held signs that criticized Paramount as well as Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cParamount Whitewashes Genocide,\u201d read one sign held by a demonstrator. Another sign read \u201cBoycott Scream 7 Stand For Free Speech\u201d while a separate one said \u201cLAPD, KKK, IDF It\u2019s All the Same,\u201d<\/a> referring to the Los Angeles Police Department, the Ku Klux Klan, and the Israel Defense Forces.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cParamount has a BLACKLIST of actors who criticize Israel,\u201d claimed another sign.<\/span><\/p>\n Barrera was set to star in \u201cScream 7\u201d after leading the fifth and sixth installments of the franchise. In November 2023, however, Spyglass Media Group, which produces the \u201cScream\u201d film franchise, fired Barrera<\/a> from reprising her role in the seventh \u201cScream\u201d movie after the Mexican actress posted on Instagram messages that described Israel as a \u201ccolonized\u201d land, suggested the Jewish state controls the media,<\/a> accused Israel of genocide and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians during the war with Hamas in Gaza, and criticized the United States for sending \u201cbillions of dollars to fund a genocide.\u201d She also shared a post about distorting \u201cthe Holocaust to boost the Israeli arms industry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Spyglass Media Group said in a statement at the time that it had \u201czero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion, or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Shortly after Barrera\u2019s firing, Jenna Ortega dropped out of \u201cScream 7,\u201d but her decision was due to a scheduling conflict, and director Christopher Landon also left the project. He made the announcement on X, writing in part,<\/a> \u201cIt was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it\u2019s time to move on.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original 1996 \u201cScream\u201d film directed by Wes Craven, returned to direct \u201cScream 7\u201d with a script from Guy Busick.
