<\/a>\u2018Creates More Enemies\u2019: Iran\u2019s War Spreads to Turkey as Analysts Warn Regional Assault Is Strategic Mistake<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\nDebbie Weiss<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Turkey became the latest unexpected target in the\u00a0widening war in the Middle East<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday after it intercepted an Iranian missile, as Iran\u2019s retaliation for joint US-Israeli strikes spreads across the region.<\/span><\/p>\n Tehran appears to be betting that hitting countries beyond Israel will ignite regional pressure on Washington to stop its military operation, but Arab and Israeli diplomats say the strategy is backfiring, with the Islamic Republic \u201ccreating more enemies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Turkey said NATO air defenses destroyed a ballistic missile fired from Iran that was detected over Iraq and Syria and heading toward Turkish airspace. Turkey, a majority Sunni country and a NATO member, shares a roughly 310-mile border with Iran. Two days earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan called for \u201can end to the bloodbath,\u201d describing the war, launched by joint US-Israeli strikes on Saturday, as \u201cillegal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Since the strikes that killed\u00a0Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei<\/a>\u00a0and other senior officials, the regime in Tehran has expanded its retaliatory missile and drone fire to hit a swath of American allies including Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Iran\u2019s interim national security chief, Ali Larijani, said on Sunday that Iran was \u201cnot seeking to attack\u201d regional states and was acting only in self-defense against American bases. But in the days since, Iranian strikes have hit civilian infrastructure including power facilities and hotels across the Gulf.<\/span><\/p>\n New figures released Wednesday by Israel\u2019s Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) show Iran has concentrated far more firepower on Gulf neighbors than on Israel in the war\u2019s opening days. Over the first four days, INSS said\u00a0Iran launched about 200 missiles<\/a>\u00a0and about 100 drones at Israel across 123 attack waves. Over the same period, it targeted the Gulf states with about 500 missiles and about 2,000 drones \u2014 2.5 times more missiles and 20 times more drones than it fired at Israel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n According to Michael Eisenstadt, a military analyst and former US Army officer at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, the attacks reflect Iran\u2019s strategy of applying graduated pressure by \u201ccatalyzing opposition to the war\u201d in the United States and other countries. Tehran hopes disruptions to oil infrastructure and higher energy prices will create pressure for a ceasefire.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n But nearly every expert called Iran\u2019s Gulf assault a blunder, saying the strikes have\u00a0caused widespread anger in the Arab world<\/a>. Six GCC states and Jordan condemned Iran\u2019s attacks as \u201cindiscriminate and reckless\u201d and reaffirmed each country\u2019s right to self-defense.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Jeremy Issacharoff, a former Israeli ambassador and arms expert, said the Iranian strategy was counterproductive, turning quasi-allies into adversaries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cAttacking countries like Qatar that were pretty much positively inclined towards them was a huge mistake,\u201d he told\u00a0The Algemeiner<\/i>. \u201cThey\u2019ve created more enemies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Issacharoff said that Tehran\u2019s leaders frame the conflict through\u00a0hostility toward Zionism and the existence<\/a>\u00a0of a Jewish state in what they see as part of the Islamic world, adding that their driving strategic goal is hegemony. \u201cIn the end, they were looking to be much more in control of the region, and of the Arab world as a whole,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n But the region was already moving in the opposite direction of what Iran wants, he said. Years of Iranian-backed missile attacks on Israel by proxy groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon had already pushed several countries to develop what he described as a regional defense mechanism, with Arab states cooperating with Israel and the US under the radar.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s discreet, but it\u2019s happening,\u201d Issacharoff said, adding that the latest attacks could\u00a0prompt the emerging coalition to expand<\/a>\u00a0cooperation even further, beyond the military arena into a broader framework for regional stability.<\/span><\/p>\n Former US Central Command (CENTCOM) communications director Joe Buccino took it a step further, telling\u00a0Fox News\u00a0that Iran\u2019s move was a \u201cstunning strategic miscalculation\u201d that could \u201cset the Gulf states on [a] path toward normalization with Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Abbas Dahouk, a retired US Army colonel who served as a senior military adviser for Middle Eastern Affairs at the US State Department, echoed Issacharoff\u2019s view that years of quiet cooperation had already strengthened a regional coalition against Iran, but he tied the acceleration to a specific turning point: Israel\u2019s inclusion in CENTCOM in 2021, which he said was a \u201ctransformative\u201d inflection point that forced regional militaries that once avoided overt ties to \u201cquietly mature counter-Iran plans over years of joint exercises and coordination.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n That groundwork is now showing up in the scale of coordination, Dahouk told\u00a0The Jerusalem Post\u00a0<\/i>in comments published Tuesday, with \u201chundreds of aircraft\u201d able to operate at once, refuel, strike concealed targets, and\u00a0counter Iran\u2019s drone and missile networks<\/a>. He added that Iran\u2019s retaliation has left Gulf states little room to stay on the sidelines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe region must view the Iranian regime as a common threat alongside the United States and Israel,\u201d he said. \u201cAt this moment, they have little alternative.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Former US General Jack Keane also told\u00a0Fox\u00a0that the Islamic Republic\u2019s strategy had \u201cbackfired.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe Gulf states are responding, they\u2019re adequately defending themselves \u2026 they\u2019re frustrated with the Iranians,\u201d Keane said, adding that several GCC states were preparing for combat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Emirati analyst Mohammad Al Ali wrote in\u00a0Gulf News<\/i>\u00a0that Iran\u2019s only success in this war so far was in \u201cuniting the region and much of the world against them, constructing a vast wall of isolation between [the] regime and the international community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Beyond the Arab world,\u00a0Iran\u2019s strikes have triggered outrage in Europe<\/a>\u00a0and led France, Greece, and Britan to deploy defensive military assets to the Mediterranean.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIran\u2019s strategy is to sow chaos and set the region on fire,\u201d European Union foreign policy chief Kaja\u00a0Kallas told reporters on Wednesday, lambasting the Iranian regime for indiscriminately attacking its neighbors.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Polish Foreign Minister Rados\u0142aw Sikorski expressed similar sentiments when asked about the\u00a0Iranian\u00a0<\/span>ballistic missile headed into Turkish airspace.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIran is broadening the war to countries that did not attack it \u2026 there is a well-known saying it\u2019s worse than a crime, it\u2019s a mistake,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n Zawarto\u015b\u0107 publikowanych artyku\u0142\u00f3w i materia\u0142\u00f3w nie reprezentuje pogl\u0105d\u00f3w ani opinii Reunion’68,<\/em> \u2018Creates More Enemies\u2019: Iran\u2019s War Spreads to Turkey as Analysts Warn Regional Assault Is Strategic Mistake Debbie Weiss Debris of a NATO air defense system that intercepted a missile launched from Iran is seen in Dortyol, in southern Hatay province, Turkey, March 4, 2026, in this screengrab from video.
