<\/a>What Is the BBC Telling Children About Iran\u2019s Nuclear Program?<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n Hadar Sela<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n On February 28, the BBC published an uncredited report headlined \u201cUS and Israel launch attacks on Iran<\/a>\u201d on its CBBC<\/a> (Children\u2019s BBC) website\u2019s Newsround page.<\/span><\/p>\n Newsround<\/a> is described<\/a> as \u201cthe home of trusted news for kids and young people,\u201d and is aimed<\/a> at children between the ages of six and 12.<\/span><\/p>\n That report opens as follows: [emphasis added]<\/span><\/p>\n The US and Israel have launched attacks on Iran, which is a country in the Middle East.<\/strong><\/p>\n US President Donald Trump said in a video that the American military has begun \u201cmajor combat operations\u201d in Iran.<\/strong><\/p>\n In a statement, Israel\u2019s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that his country was working with the US to remove what he called a threat to both countries.<\/strong><\/p>\n It comes after US talks with Iran to try and stop them from developing a nuclear weapon, something that Iran denies it is doing.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n In a later section sub-headed \u201cWhat are nuclear weapons,\u201d the BBC\u2019s young audiences are told that:<\/span><\/p>\n Iran has been long suspected of trying to build a nuclear bomb, which it has always denied.<\/strong><\/p>\n It says its nuclear research is for peaceful purposes, like making electricity. For many years a United Nations body (called the IAEA) has said that Iran has not been following rules on sharing information about its nuclear programme.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n While this is by no means the first time that the BBC has amplified Iran\u2019s denials concerning its nuclear program<\/a>, it is particularly disappointing to see the younger generation being fed that disinformation, especially given that the BBC has itself reported<\/a> in the past that:<\/span><\/p>\n Nuclear power stations typically need about 3-5% of this enriched uranium to generate a controlled nuclear reaction that releases energy.<\/strong><\/p>\n But when the aim is to make a nuclear weapon, a much higher proportion of uranium-235 is needed \u2013 about 90%.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n The BBC knows<\/a> full well that Iran\u2019s levels of enrichment<\/a> of uranium-235 have reached<\/a> at least<\/a> 60% \u2014 a level which has no civilian use<\/a> and is far higher<\/a> than needed to \u201cmake electricity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n It also knows that Iran has actively (and in violation of international agreement) prevented<\/a> the IAEA<\/a> from inspecting its nuclear facilities, including<\/a> the storage site for some of its highly enriched uranium.<\/span><\/p>\n The BBC is no doubt familiar with the long history<\/a> of the Iranian regime\u2019s<\/a> nuclear aspirations, as well as<\/a> its more recent<\/a> developments.<\/span><\/p>\n The BBC also ought to be able to inform its younger audiences about that regime\u2019s history of using proxies<\/a> and ballistic missiles<\/a> to attack Israel \u2014 and of its repeated threats<\/a> to destroy the country. However, this \u201ctrusted news\u201d article airbrushes all such important context and instead tells readers that:<\/span><\/p>\n Israel and Iran have been enemies for many years, but in recent times the tension between the countries has resulted in military attacks on each other.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n If, for reasons best known to itself, the BBC thinks that it is ticking the impartiality box by uncritically amplifying the Iranian regime\u2019s redundant denials concerning its nuclear program, it should at least also provide the background information that would enable its audiences \u2014 whether adults or children \u2014 to put those denials into their appropriate context.<\/span><\/p>\n The failure to do so means that Britain\u2019s national broadcaster simply continues to promote the disinformation put out by a repressive, theocratic regime.<\/span><\/p>\n Hadar Sela<\/strong> is the co-editor of CAMERA UK \u2013 an affiliate of the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting and Analysis (CAMERA), where a version of this article <\/span>first appeared. <\/span><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n Zawarto\u015b\u0107 publikowanych artyku\u0142\u00f3w i materia\u0142\u00f3w nie reprezentuje pogl\u0105d\u00f3w ani opinii Reunion’68,<\/em> What Is the BBC Telling Children About Iran\u2019s Nuclear Program?
