Photo: Rebecca Cook via Reuters Connect<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Security guards assigned to protect Temple Israel, a synagogue in Oakland County, Michigan, killed a gunman who crashed his truck into the front entrance of the Jewish facility on Thursday before opening fire, according to local and federal law enforcement officials.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The prompt response to the threat spared the lives of staff and children enrolled in a day school on the campus, making the shooter\u2019s killing the only fatality to result from the incident.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cLockdown is still in place, but the active shooter has been taken down,\u201d the synagogue told congregants via text message in the early afternoon. \u201cLockdown will be in place until they know that the shooter was working alone. All kids and all staff accounted for and fine. Truck rammed into front door and opened fire.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-item-body\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The synagogue \u2014 located in West Bloomfield Township, a suburb of Detroit \u2014 later issued a statement noting \u201ceveryone is safe\u201d after what it described as a \u201cterrorist gunman\u201d attacked the building.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cTemple Israel was the victim of a terrorist gunman who was confronted and neutralized by our security personnel who are truly heroes,\u201d the synagogue wrote, praising staff and security for protecting the 140 kids at its early childhood center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cOur teachers followed their training and kept the children safe and calm.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Eight first responders were injured and being treated at the hospital, according to Henry Ford Health.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-item-body\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe emergency medicine teams at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital and Henry Ford Providence Novi Hospital are currently caring for eight first responders following this afternoon\u2019s incident at Temple Israel,\u201d the hospital said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-item-body\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said earlier that a security guard was struck by the suspect\u2019s truck and injured.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">West Bloomfield Police Chief Dale Young told reporters that the suspect \u201cbreached the building\u201d and \u201cdrove in through doors with a vehicle,\u201d adding that surveillance showed the vehicle \u201ctraveling with purpose down the hall.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Officials said that security personnel \u201cengaged the suspect with gunfire.\u201d The assailant, reportedly armed with a rifle, exchanged shots with security before being killed. According to reports, the suspect\u2019s body was badly burned, as the vehicle caught fire after crashing into Temple Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-item-body\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The vehicle used in the attack is registered to a naturalized US citizen from Lebanon who lives in Dearborn, Fox News reported citing three law enforcement sources.\u00a0<em>The Algemeiner<\/em>\u00a0could not immediately verify that information. Investigators are reportedly working to determine if the name tied to the vehicle registration matches the suspect who died at the scene.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cMichigan\u2019s Jewish community should be able to live and practice their faith in peace,\u201d Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) said in a statement responding to the attack. \u201cAntisemitism and violence have no place in Michigan.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">US President Donald Trump addressed the incident during remarks at a White House Women\u2019s History Month event.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-item-body\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cBefore we begin, I want to send our love to the Michigan Jewish community and all of the people in Detroit, Detroit area, following the attack on the Jewish synagogue early today,\u201d Trump said, noting he had been \u201cfully briefed\u201d on the situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-item-body\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a terrible thing,\u201d Trump added. \u201cBut it goes on. We\u2019re going to get right down to the bottom of it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The incident came amid a welter of antisemitic hate crimes across the US and broader Western world since the Hamas-led Oct. 7, 2023, massacre across southern Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Last May, two Israeli embassy staffers were s<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/09\/04\/suspect-killing-israeli-embassy-staffers-washington-pleads-not-guilty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hot dead in Washington, DC<\/a>\u00a0while leaving an event for young Jewish professionals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Days later, an assailant\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/09\/03\/after-deadly-firebombing-boulder-jews-forced-hide-weekly-hostage-march-escalating-harassment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">threw Molotov cocktails at a group<\/a>\u00a0of Jewish activists advocating for the Israeli hostages still being held in Gaza at the time, killing one person and injuring 13.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In January, a young man suspected of setting the Beth Israel Congregationin Jackson, Mississippi on fire told investigators he\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2026\/01\/12\/arson-suspect-targeted-mississippi-synagogue-jewish-ties-laughed-during-confession-fbi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">targeted the synagogue over its \u201cJewish ties.\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Another<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/12\/18\/man-arrested-arson-san-francisco-hillel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0arsonist struck the San Francisco Hillel<\/a>\u00a0building in December.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Last month, two men trespassed the grounds of the Olami Dallas Center in Texas and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2026\/02\/19\/two-men-spit-say-free-palestine-they-attempt-gain-access-jewish-center-dallas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">demanded entry to the home<\/a>\u00a0of its rabbi by claiming to be window cleaners. According to StandWithUs, a Jewish advocacy group, the perpetrators rang the doorbell of Rabbi Yaakov Rubin, who refused to let them, in response to which one of the men spat on the property as the other said \u201cFree Palestine.\u201d StandWithUs added that they also said \u201cfake Jews\u201d during their attempt to gain access to the building.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe pattern is now apparent,\u201d Sabrina Soffer, research fellow for the Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs, told\u00a0<em>The Algemeiner\u00a0<\/em>on Thursday. \u201cWe have allowed radical anti-civilizational ideologies and entities to infiltrate our society, and we are paying the price. What started with \u2018globalize the intifada\u2019 and \u2018free, free Palestine\u2019 and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2026\/03\/06\/tool-enemy-tucker-carlson-under-fire-latest-unhinged-rant-blaming-iran-war-chabad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tucker Carlson\u2019s conspiracy mongering against Chabad<\/a>\u00a0led inexorably to anti-Jewish violence. We have to fight against these pernicious ideas in K-12 classrooms, on the campus, and anywhere else they appear.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Antisemitism in the US has surged to break \u201call previous annual records,\u201d according to a series of recent reports issued by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which has said the numbers are the highest recorded since it began keeping data on antisemitic incidents in 1979.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The FBI has disclosed similar numbers, showing that even as hate crimes across the US decreased overall, those perpetrated against Jews increased by 5.8 percent in 2024 to 1,938, the largest total recorded in over 30 years of the FBI\u2019s counting them.
