<\/a>Iran\u2019s Soccer Federation \u2018Negotiating\u2019 With FIFA to Relocate World Cup Matches From US to Mexico<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\nShiryn Ghermezian<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Iran\u2019s soccer federation said on Monday it is \u201cnegotiating\u201d with FIFA to relocate the Islamic Republic\u2019s first-round matches in the 2026 World Cup to Mexico from the United States to ensure the safety of its players.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWhen Trump has explicitly stated that he cannot ensure the security of the Iranian national team, we will certainly not travel to America,\u201d said Mehdi Taj, president of the Iranian Football Federation, in a\u00a0statement<\/a>\u00a0shared on X by the Iranian Embassy in Mexico. \u201cWe are currently negotiating with FIFA to hold Iran\u2019s matches in the World Cup in Mexico.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The negotiations are taking place after the US and Israel launched joint airstrikes against Iran in late February, which\u00a0led to the\u00a0killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0several other high-ranking Iranian officials<\/a>.\u00a0Iran has since retaliated with attacks on Israel and US allies across the Middle East.<\/span><\/p>\n The 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place from June 11-July 19 in cities across the US, Canada and Mexico.\u00a0Iran qualified for the 48-team tournament through its participation in the \u200cAsian \u2060Football Conference and is set to compete in Group G at the World Cup. Iran\u2019s national soccer team is scheduled to compete against New Zealand on June 15 and Belgium on June 21, both in Los Angeles, before going head-to-head against Egypt on June 26 in Seattle. Soccer fans from Iran are not allowed to enter the United States for the World Cup as part of a\u00a0travel ban<\/a>\u00a0that the Trump administration imposed in June, but Iranian athletes and coaches are exempt from the ban.<\/span><\/p>\n Last week, US President Donald Trump wrote on the social media website Truth Social that Iran\u2019s national soccer team is \u201cwelcome\u201d to compete in World Cup, but he does not think \u201cit is appropriate\u201d for them to participate \u201cfor their own life and safety.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The Iranian team\u00a0responded\u00a0<\/a>to Trump\u2019s post by saying in a statement on Telegram that a single person cannot exclude a country from the World Cup. They also suggested the US \u201clacks the ability\u201d to provide security for World Cup-participating teams.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe World Cup is a historic and international event and its governing body is FIFA \u2014 not any individual country. Iran\u2019s national team, with strength and a series of decisive victories achieved by the brave sons of Iran, was among the first teams to qualify for this major tournament,\u201d the statement said. \u201cCertainly no one can exclude Iran\u2019s national team from the World Cup. The only country that could be excluded is one that merely carries the title of \u2018host\u2019 yet lacks the ability to provide security for the teams participating in this global event.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n However, Iranian Sports and Youth Minister Ahmad Donyamali reportedly told state television it is \u201cnot possible\u201d for the country to participate in the\u00a0World Cup this year because of the US airstrikes on Iran.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cDue to the wicked acts they have done against Iran \u2014 they have imposed two wars on us over just eight or nine months and have killed and martyred thousands of our people \u2014 definitely it\u2019s not possible for us to take part in the World Cup,\u201d he said, according to the Associated Press.<\/span><\/p>\n Trump later posted again on social media about the World Cup. \u201cThe United States of America looks very much forward to hosting the FIFA World Cup. Ticket sales are \u2018through the roof!’\u201d he added. \u201cIt will be the Greatest and Safest Sporting Event in American History. All Players, Officials, and Fans will be treated like the \u2018STARS\u2019 that they are!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n FIFA President Gianni Infantino said in an Instagram\u00a0post<\/a>\u00a0last week\u00a0that he met with President Trump and the latter \u201creiterated that the Iranian team is, of course, welcome to compete in the tournament in the United States.\u201d FIFA Chief Operating Officer Heimo Schirgi recently said the World Cup is\u00a0\u201ctoo big\u201d<\/a>\u00a0to postpone amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
