Photo: Ajay Suresh via Wikimedia Commons.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A group of anti-Israel artists and writers has launched an initiative urging creatives to boycott the New York institution 92NY, formally known as the 92nd Street Y, because the historic nonprofit community center has hosted cultural and political figures who support Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The collective, called 92NO,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/92no.org\/history.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0on its website that the 92NY \u201cstage and venue is tainted by [its] actions throughout the genocide.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In a statement explaining the group\u2019s formation, members said their frustration with the 92NY started in October 2023, when it canceled a scheduled talk with Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Viet \u064fThanh Nguyen that was organized by 92NY\u2019s Unterberg Poetry Center. The event was called off after the author signed an\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lrb.co.uk\/blog\/2023\/october\/an-open-letter-on-the-situation-in-palestine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">open letter<\/a>\u00a0that criticized Israel and called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and an arms embargo on the Jewish state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The same open letter accused Israel of \u201cethnic cleansing,\u201d \u201cgenocide,\u201d and the \u201coccupation of Palestine.\u201d It condemned \u201cthe deliberate killing of civilians,\u201d without denouncing by name the Hamas terrorist organization, which led a deadly assault in southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, which started the conflict in Gaza. The letter was published shortly after the start of the Israel-Hamas war.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The cancellation of Nguyen\u2019s event resulted in several writers withdrawing their own scheduled appearances from the 92NY and resignations from staff members. The 92NY venue\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2023\/10\/24\/major-new-york-center-pauses-literary-series-backlash-pulling-event-author-who-slammed-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paused\u00a0<\/a>events as part of its literary series \u201cgiven recent staff resignations.\u201d Seth Pensky, CEO of the 92NY, defended the decision at the time in an interview with<em>\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/article\/92ny-israel-palestine-hamas-war.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Magazine<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and refuted accusations of \u201ccensorship.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Nguyen has previously expressed support for the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel, and in 2024, he joined over 1,000 prominent authors in vowing to boycott Israeli cultural institutions, including publishers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In its statement, 92NO noted that after the Nguyen event was canceled, 92NY organized \u201ca series of public events boosting cultural and political support for Israel\u201d that featured figures such as former Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid, journalist Bari Weiss, former US special envoy for monitoring and combating antisemitism Deborah Lipstadt, actress Debra Messing, and \u201cvarious Israeli military, cultural, and academic figures.\u201d The protest group accused 92NY of expressing a \u201cclear bias and support for Israel\u2019s ongoing assault on Gaza.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThroughout 2025 and into 2026, 92NY has continued to platform aggressively pro-Israel public figures,\u201d the coalition stated, before listing featured speakers including journalist Bret Stephens, US Rep. Ritchie Torres, novelist Dara Horn, Israeli activist Hen Mazzig \u2013 whom the group labeled as an \u201cIsraeli propagandist\u201d \u2014 Israeli journalists Ronen Bergman and Nadav Eyal, Bernard-Henri L\u00e9vy, New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, former White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, and Palantir CEO Alex Karp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The group specifically accused Sullivan of having \u201coutright complicity in the Gaza genocide,\u201d and claimed he is \u201cone of the chief architects and cheerleaders for Israel\u2019s assault on Gaza.\u201d 92NY also called Karp a \u201ctech world Zionist Bond villain\u201d and criticized Horn for \u201crepeated genocide and apartheid denial.\u201d They claimed Torres is \u201cfunding Israel\u2019s genocide in Gaza\u201d because he supports the US providing military aid to the longtime ally and took issue with his \u201cobsessive pro-Israel posting on social media.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div id=\"history\" class=\"section\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cNearly three dozen scheduled artists have withdrawn from events at 92NY,\u201d 92NO said in conclusion. \u201cLocal activists gather regularly in front of the building to picket against the pro-war, pro-genocide speakers platformed on the 92NY stage. In April 2026, 92NO officially launched, calling on artists to refuse to allow their names and works to be used to launder the reputation of 92NY.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">92NY did not immediately respond to\u00a0<em>The Algemeiner<\/em>\u2018s request for comment about 92NO.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">On the 92NY.org\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.92ny.org\/about-92ny\/policies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Policy Page<\/a>, the center has a section titled \u201cRegarding Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWe reaffirm that, as we curate our programming going forward, we will continue to welcome a broad range of viewpoints to our platform, including welcoming people who are critical of Israel, as long as they have not and do not actively call for the destruction of the State of Israel or question its legitimacy,\u201d the policy states.
