Credit: Daniel Torok\/White House.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"Page-articleBody\">\n<div class=\"RichTextArticleBody RichTextBody\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Canadian Jewish organizations told JNS that questions remain after Mark Carney, the Canadian prime minister, announced a new national council on Monday to \u201ccombat racism and hate in all their forms and to guide the government of Canada as part of our efforts to build a fairer, more just, more inclusive society.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Speaking at Holy Blossom Temple, a Reform synagogue in Toronto, Carney\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link\" style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pm.gc.ca\/en\/news\/news-releases\/2026\/06\/01\/prime-minister-carney-highlights-new-measures-combat-antisemitism-and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">said<\/a><\/span>\u00a0that Marc Gold, a former member of the Canadian Senate, will join the council which will address Jew-hatred as its \u201cfirst responsibility.\u201d The prime minister called antisemitism a \u201cscourge.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Richard Robertson, director of research and advocacy at B\u2019nai Brith Canada, told JNS that the speech was \u201ca missed opportunity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Jewish organization was hoping for an \u201cannouncement of true tactical changes that could positively show the lived experience of Jewish Canadians,\u201d Robertson said. \u201cUnfortunately, we didn\u2019t get that today.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Carney\u2019s recognition that Jew-hatred is a problem is \u201ccritical,\u201d according to Robertson. But government systems \u201chave failed us, and we require that they be fixed with urgency,\u201d he told JNS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">B\u2019nai Brith Canada has proposed eight actions items that the government can take to address the \u201cnational crisis\u201d of Jew-hatred, according to Robertson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIt was lots of rhetoric,\u201d Robertson told JNS, of the prime minister\u2019s speech. \u201cOne naturally has to question whether or not this council has the expertise and the ability to undertake what the prime minister said would be its priorities related to antisemitism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In April, B\u2019nai Brith said that it\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link\" style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jns.org\/news\/world\/most-jew-hatred-in-canada-in-2025-in-44-years-bnai-brith-has-tracked-hate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">recorded<\/a><\/span>\u00a0the most incidents of Jew-hatred in Canada in 2025 since it began tracking such numbers in 1982.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Carney said that Marc Miller, Canadian minister of identity and culture, will chair the new ministerial advisory council on rights, equality and inclusion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The council will assess the \u201cnature, the scale and the drivers\u201d of antisemitism in Canada, coordinate a \u201cwhole-of-government approach,\u201d monitor compliance at federal agencies and community initiatives, improve data collection on hate incidents and measure the impact of the government\u2019s efforts, Carney said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The measures are not \u201ccurtailments of freedom of expression,\u201d the prime minister said. \u201cThey are not constraints on legitimate criticism of any government on any subject, anywhere.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cAntisemitism has surged to levels not seen in the post-war period,\u201d he said. \u201cLast year, over two-thirds of all religion motivated hate crimes were directed to Jewish Canadians who make up only 1% of the population.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The prime minister cited firebombs thrown at synagogues, students driven out of universities, attacks on Jewish-owned businesses and the desecration of a Holocaust memorial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">His government has been acting to protect Canadian citizens with six new pieces of legislation to address public safety and combat antisemitism and hatred, including the Combating Hate Act, which \u201csignificantly strengthens the criminal code by creating new offenses for intimidation and obstruction\u201d at Jewish institutions, Carney said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">He also cited more $75 million in government-issued funds to protect Jewish institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Melissa Lantsman, a member of the Canadian Parliament and deputy leader of the Conservative Party, stated that \u201cCarney spoke at a synagogue about antisemitism three years into a documented crisis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cGunshots into schools. Firebombs into businesses. Effigies of Jews hung in the streets. Full incitement of hatred against Canadians, weekly, in their own neighborhoods,\u201d she stated. \u201cTerrorists free to roam in our country, funding antisemitism in our institutions. A complete failure to enforce the most basic laws against a lawless mob.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cHere are his \u2018actions&#8217;: reviewing previous reviews. Studying studies. A new council, chaired by the government, tasked with assessing the government\u2019s response to a crisis the government itself presided over, funded and fueled for years,\u201d she\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link\" style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MelissaLantsman\/status\/2061581660584366333\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">wrote<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201c\u2018Canada\u2019s civic compact is failing Jewish Canadians\u2019 is an extraordinary admission,\u201d she stated. \u201cIt should have been followed by concrete actions and concrete consequences for those doing the failing.
