<\/a>US Has \u2018Switched Sides\u2019 by Handing Iran a Lebanon Victory, Israeli Expert Warns as Tehran Recruits for Hezbollah<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\nDebbie Weiss<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n The newly established five-nation\u00a0deconfliction mechanism for Lebanon<\/a>\u00a0is a catastrophic strategic betrayal by Washington, a former Israeli intelligence official warned, saying that US President Donald Trump has effectively \u201cswitched sides\u201d by handing Iran a diplomatic victory and curtailing Israel\u2019s freedom of action against Hezbollah.<\/span><\/p>\n Navy Commander (ret.) Eyal Pinko, a former Israeli intelligence officer and senior research fellow at the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies, said the mechanism, announced after US-Iran talks in Switzerland mediated by Qatar and Pakistan, is \u201cnothing more than a political declaration,\u201d but one with far-reaching consequences, effectively signaling Washington\u2019s acceptance of Iran\u2019s role as Lebanon\u2019s patron and giving Qatar and Pakistan a role in providing diplomatic cover for that status.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe new mechanism between Pakistan, Qatar, Iran, the US, and Lebanon is a very strong political statement of power by Iran,\u201d Pinko said, adding that it is \u201canother step that indicates that Trump has switched sides.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Pinko said the mechanism gives US-backed recognition to the message that \u201cIran, the patron of Lebanon, has not left and neither will it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Iran, meanwhile, appears to be\u00a0entrenching itself further in Lebanon<\/a>, according to recent reports. An Israeli security source told the Saudi Al-Arabiya channel in a report published Monday that a number of Iranian officers are operating in the Ali Taher Ridge area in southern Lebanon, holding key roles in managing the fighting and coordinating operational activity.<\/span><\/p>\n In a separate report published Thursday, Israel\u2019s Channel 12 said the Iranian regime was leading a direct effort to recruit new fighters into Hezbollah\u2019s ranks following the heavy losses the Iran-backed terrorist group sustained in manpower, command structures, commanders, and operatives during the fighting against the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). As part of the recruitment campaign, reportedly visible on the streets of Tehran, volunteers were being offered a monthly salary of $1,000, far above Iran\u2019s minimum wage of about $140.<\/span><\/p>\n Israel and Lebanon are also holding US-mediated talks in Washington over a\u00a0proposed \u201cpilot zone\u201d arrangement<\/a>\u00a0that would see Israeli forces hand over some areas of southern Lebanon to Lebanese army units. Senior Israeli and Lebanese officials denied Thursday that Israel had withdrawn from territory it holds in southern Lebanon, after a US State Department official said Israel had pulled back from parts of the area in what the official described as a \u201cgood faith\u201d gesture toward Lebanon\u2019s government.<\/span><\/p>\n The deconfliction cell was announced Monday in a joint statement by Qatar and Pakistan, the mediators of the US-Iran talks at the Burgenstock resort in Switzerland. The statement said the parties had agreed to create a cell involving the parties, Lebanon, and the mediators to ensure adherence to the \u201ctermination of military operations in Lebanon\u201d under the US-Iran memorandum of understanding. Israel was not named in the statement, though a senior US official later denied to Channel 12 that Jerusalem was being cut out entirely.<\/span><\/p>\n According to Israel\u2019s Channel 12, the new framework would limit Israeli military action to responses to \u201cimminent threats,\u201d rather than \u201cemerging threats,\u201d as Israel\u2019s current policy allows. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi hailed the mechanism, calling it \u201cmajor progress to end the Lebanon War.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Vice President JD Vance described the arrangement as a way to prevent incidents in Lebanon from spiraling into more violence. But his remarks also alarmed some Israeli observers after he appeared to\u00a0treat Hezbollah as part of the diplomatic framework<\/a>\u00a0rather than addressing it solely as an Iranian-backed terrorist proxy.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe could actually have a better and more peaceful situation if Israel responds in the context of a conversation that is ongoing between Hezbollah, Lebanon, Israel and other partners in the region,\u201d Vance said.<\/span><\/p>\n The US wanted both Israel\u2019s security and Lebanon\u2019s sovereignty protected, and that the effort would require coordination with the Lebanese Armed Forces and \u201cthe Iranians to rein in Hezbollah,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n Iran and Hezbollah both openly seek Israel\u2019s destruction and are each responsible for at least several hundred of not thousands of American deaths.<\/span><\/p>\n Trump has also intensified public criticism of Israel\u2019s military campaign in Lebanon, suggesting that Jerusalem has responded too forcefully to Hezbollah activity.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cYou don\u2019t have to knock down a building every time somebody walks into it that\u2019s from Hezbollah,\u201d Trump said during a press conference last week. \u201cWe have a little dispute over Lebanon. I say you can do a little softer touch, Bibi.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly rejected any suggestion that the IDF\u2019s hands would be tied. In a Hebrew statement after the reports emerged, he said Israeli forces in southern Lebanon had \u201cfull freedom of action\u201d against any direct or emerging threat to troops or residents of northern Israel, and that the IDF faced \u201cno restrictions\u201d in that regard. He also reiterated that Israel would\u00a0maintain its security zone in southern Lebanon<\/a>\u00a0for as long as necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n Israeli President Isaac Herzog also pushed back on any arrangement that would tie Lebanon\u2019s future to Tehran. Speaking at the JNS International Policy Summit in Jerusalem on Monday, Herzog said the conflict in Lebanon \u201cshould be resolved through direct negotiations between Israel and Lebanon and not by Iranian extortion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe disarmament of Hezbollah must be inherent to any solution in Lebanon, and Iran cannot dictate the future of Lebanon,\u201d Herzog said.<\/span><\/p>\n While Pinko did not dismiss the possibility that Trump and Netanyahu were \u201chatching some big, strategic plan that we don\u2019t yet understand,\u201d he made clear that such a scenario was highly unlikely.
