<\/a>Spanish Broadcaster Apologizes for Omitting Name, Nationality of Israeli Athlete During Live Broadcast<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\nShiryn Ghermezian<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Spain\u2019s national broadcaster RTVE apologized on Friday for skipping over an Israeli athlete when introducing the lineup of runners for the men\u2019s 400-meter hurdles race at the 2026 European Athletics Championships in the United Kingdom.<\/span><\/p>\n RTVE commentators were introducing the runners one-by-one before the start of the qualifying race this week at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, and Israel\u2019s Omri Shiff, 25, was waiting at block five at the starting line. When his turn came to be introduced, the RTVE camera panned on him<\/a> but commentators continued speaking about Slovakian runner Patrik D\u00f6m\u00f6t\u00f6r on block six before introducing Hungary\u2019s \u00c1rp\u00e1d B\u00e1n\u00f3czy on block four. Shiff was the only runner in the lineup whose name and nationality were not mentioned.<\/span><\/p>\n The incident drew criticism from the Israeli Embassy in Spain<\/a> and the Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain (FCJE), which accused<\/a> RTVE of \u201cdiscrimination\u201d and \u201cantisemitism\u201d for failing to identify the Israeli athlete. In an open letter<\/a> to RTVE President Jos\u00e9 Pablo L\u00f3pez, the FCJE expressed its \u201cdiscomfort and deep concern\u201d over the incident and noted that while RTVE \u201cindividually presented all the athletes\u201d before the start of the race, Shiff was \u201ccompletely omitted without any explanation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThis unequal and selective treatment of an athlete due to his nationality constitutes, in our opinion, an act of discrimination incompatible with the values of neutrality, plurality, and integration that must govern the public radio and television service,\u201d FCJE said. The federation called for RTVE to publicly apology, rectify the situation, and guarantee that in the future, all athletes will be treated equally \u201cregardless of their nationality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n In response, RTVE\u2019s sports television channel Teledeporte apologized for the incident and claimed there was no \u201cpolitical, ideological, or religious motives\u201d for its omission of Shiff\u2019s name or nationality.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe sincerely regret not having named all the athletes who appeared on screen during the Teledeporte broadcast, as happened in the case of the Israeli athlete Omar Siff,\u201d Teledeporte wrote in a Spanish-language statement<\/a> posted on X. \u201cThis situation is due exclusively to the complexity of the long athletics sessions and to the inherent dynamics of live broadcasting \u2014 such as trackside commentary or production needs \u2014 without any relation to political, ideological, or religious motives. Our commitment is to give visibility to each and every participant, and we work to achieve this in every broadcast. We reiterate our apology to the affected athlete.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The Spanish pro-Israel group ACOM accused<\/a> RTVE of \u201cinstitutional antisemitism\u201d and its commentators, Lourdes Garc\u00eda Campos and Jes\u00fas Espa\u00f1a, of \u201cdeliberately\u201d omitting Shiff\u2019s name and nationality. \u201cThey present everyone \u2026 except the representative from Israel,\u201d ACOM said. \u201cMiserable. Antisemites. Funded with the money of all Spaniards.\u201d The group also accused the broadcaster of turning \u201csports into an instrument of hate and discrimination.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The European Athletics Championships, which is the biggest athletics event in Europe, is being held from Aug. 10-16.<\/span><\/p>\n RTVE withdrew<\/a> its participation in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest and also refused to broadcast the competition in protest of Israel\u2019s participation and its military actions in the Gaza Strip during the Israel-Hamas war.<\/span><\/p>\n Meanwhile, the Spanish government has been among the world\u2019s fiercest critics of Israel since the outbreak of the Gaza war, leading to a deteriorating diplomatic rift<\/a>.
