Photo: REUTERS\/Murad Sezer<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israeli Prime Minister Benjaman Netanyahu\u2019s office on Friday lambasted\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2026\/06\/26\/turkey-expands-online-censorship-silences-dissent-erdogan-tightens-grip-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan<\/a>\u00a0as an \u201cantisemitic dictator\u201d hours after Turkey said it would seek an international arrest warrant for Netanyahu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The latest developments further escalated already high tensions between the two countries following Israel\u2019s strike earlier this week on a Syrian airbase over Israeli concerns regarding the potential deployment of Turkish troops there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In the Israeli statement, Netanyahu\u2019s office vowed to combat Erdogan\u2019s \u201caggression\u201d in the Middle East and described the Turkish effort to get him arrested as a \u201cpathetic\u201d way to try to intimidate Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cErdogan is an antisemitic dictator who has massacred Kurds,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2026\/04\/01\/turkish-intel-chief-hosts-hamas-leaders-new-report-warns-turkeys-ties-muslim-brotherhood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">harbors Hamas terrorists<\/a>, occupies half of Cyprus, and jails record numbers of journalists and politicians who oppose him,\u201d the statement said. \u201cHe now seeks to extend his aggression against Israel into Syria. Israel will not tolerate it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Netanyahu\u2019s office added, \u201cErdogan\u2019s pathetic attempt to intimidate the leaders and soldiers of Israel, the only true democracy in the Middle East, will go nowhere.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The statement came after Turkey earlier on Friday said it would seek an Interpol red notice for the arrest of Netanyahu as part of a domestic criminal case linked to Israel\u2019s interception of an\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2026\/05\/21\/irish-pm-seeks-eu-israel-trade-review-gaza-flotilla-abduction-president-says-shes-proud-sister-aboard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">activist flotilla bound for Gaza<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">An Interpol red notice is a global alert to police forces worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person, but it does not legally compel any country to make an arrest. Instead, the measure relies on a national arrest warrant or court order issued by a specific country or international tribunal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Turkish Justice Minister Akin Gurlek announced the move on social media, saying that arrest warrants had been issued for Netanyahu and another suspect on charges that included \u201cgenocide\u201d and \u201ccrimes against humanity\u201d as part of a case before an Istanbul court against 35 people concerning Israel\u2019s interception of the Gaza-bound flotilla.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cA request has been made to our Ministry of Interior for the issuance of a red notice at the international level for their search, and the relevant documents have been forwarded to our Ministry of Foreign Affairs,\u201d Gurlek posted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">As part of\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2026\/06\/15\/global-sumud-flotilla-announces-new-gaza-bound-mission-challenge-israeli-blockade-once-again\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Global Sumud Flotilla<\/a>, anti-Israel activists have tried multiple times to break Israel\u2019s naval blockade of Gaza, claiming they aim to deliver humanitarian aid to the enclave. Israeli authorities have noted that the amount of aid on the flotillas have been tiny in comparison to the humanitarian aid entering Gaza, calling the activist effort a \u201cPR stunt.\u201d Each time Israeli forces have intercepted the ships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israel launched its blockade to prevent Hamas, the Palestinian terrorist group that ruled Gaza before the war and currently controls about 40 percent of its territory, from getting weapons and other supplies to attack the Jewish state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza in October 2023, Erdogan has emerged as one of Israel\u2019s fiercest critics on the global stage, comparing the country to Nazi Germany and even threatening to invade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">However,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2026\/05\/25\/israel-accuses-erdogan-crushing-turkish-democracy-police-storm-ousted-opposition-out-headquarters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tensions skyrocketed<\/a>\u00a0even further earlier this week over Syria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israel warned Turkey on Thursday against \u201cdangerous adventures\u201d in Syria, two days after striking an airbase where it said Ankara was preparing to deploy troops.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Erdogan is \u201cdragging Turkey into dangerous adventures in Syria. Israel will not allow any actor to threaten its security,\u201d Defense Minister Israel Katz wrote on X. \u201cHe would be better off continuing to deliver empty, fantastical speeches against Israel in the Turkish parliament rather than testing Israel\u2019s determination to defend itself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Turkey\u2019s Defense Ministry hit back, saying Ankara would continue supporting Syria\u2019s efforts to develop its military capabilities and infrastructure. \u201cIt is essential for the peace and stability of both Syria and the region that Israel ceases such reckless attacks and complies with the requirements of international law,\u201d the ministry said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The exchange followed\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2026\/08\/18\/israeli-airstrikes-hit-syrian-airbase-drawing-turkish-condemnation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Israel\u2019s strike on Tuesday<\/a>\u00a0on the Abu al-Duhur airbase in northwestern Syria, where Israeli officials said Turkey was preparing to establish a military presence. The attack damaged runways and hangars at the base, which had recently undergone reconstruction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Netanyahu said Israel had warned Ankara against moving forces into the area before the strike. \u201cWe made it clear to Turkey: Don\u2019t,\u201d he said Wednesday. \u201cApparently they didn\u2019t hear the message, so we made sure they understood it better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Syrian officials disputed Israel\u2019s account, saying there had been no plan to establish a Turkish base or permanent troop presence at Abu al-Duhur. Turkey\u2019s Defense Ministry also denied that a Turkish military delegation was at the base before or during the Israeli strike.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Four days before the attack,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2026\/08\/19\/mossad-chief-syrian-foreign-minister-discussed-turkish-military-deployments-before-strikes-sources-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mossad chief Roman Gofman spoke with<\/a>\u00a0Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani in one of the highest-level known contacts between Israel and Syria\u2019s new government, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing three people familiar with the matter. Turkey\u2019s military role was a central subject of the call, with Gofman raising Israeli concerns about Turkish troop deployments, weapons sales, and drones supplied to the Syrian military, according to the report.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The strike was the clearest sign yet that Israel is prepared to use force to prevent Ankara from establishing military capabilities there that could threaten Israel or restrict its freedom of action, an approach Eitan Shamir, director of the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies at Bar-Ilan University, said was based on \u201csimilar logic\u201d to Israel\u2019s years-long campaign against Iran\u2019s military entrenchment in Syria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Shamir drew a distinction, however, between Turkey\u2019s role today and the much deeper relationship Iran had with Syria under former President Bashar al-Assad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIt was a kind of exchange,\u201d he told\u00a0<i>The Algemeiner<\/i>. The Iranians \u201cguaranteed the regime\u2019s survival, and the [Assad] regime opened the door to them completely. The idea was to build a front directly against Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">From Israel\u2019s point of view, the response is essentially the same, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWe don\u2019t like either of them. We\u2019re telling everyone that there is a red line, and if you cross it, we will act. We will\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/04\/03\/israel-steps-up-syria-strikes-says-turkey-aims-protectorate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">destroy everything you are building<\/a>\u00a0and everything you are doing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">However, Hay Eytan Cohen Yanarocak, a Turkey expert at Tel Aviv University\u2019s Moshe Dayan Center, said Israel was careful not to jeopardize longstanding ties with Turkey, which date back to Turkey\u2019s recognition of Israel in 1949 and, unlike its relations with many regional neighbors, did not require a formal peace treaty.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cTurning Turkey into an active enemy would be contrary to Israel\u2019s national security interests,\u201d he told\u00a0<i>The Algemeiner.<\/i>\u00a0\u201cThe main objective of the latest strike was precisely to prevent a more serious confrontation with Turkey in Syria and to reduce the potential for further friction between the two countries.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to Shamir, Turkey views\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/11\/10\/trump-vows-make-syria-successful-historic-white-house-meeting-president-ex-al-qaeda-commander\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa\u2019s government<\/a>\u00a0as a client state after helping him in his fight against Assad.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe Turks see Syria completely as their backyard,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Ankara, Shamir added, views northern Syria as an area under \u201cquasi-Turkish sovereignty,\u201d with Turkish forces already deployed there and a de facto security zone along the Turkish border.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Turkey has become one of al-Sharaa\u2019s closest foreign backers since\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/12\/09\/fall-assad-tectonic-shift-middle-east\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Assad was ousted in December 2024<\/a>. Ankara and Damascus signed a military cooperation accord in 2025, under which Turkey agreed to provide training, weapons systems, and logistical equipment to Syria\u2019s military. Shamir described al-Sharaa as \u201ca kind of prot\u00e9g\u00e9 or even a proxy\u201d for Turkey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The growing ties have also extended to the Mediterranean. Turkish Naval Forces Commander Adm. Ercument Tatlioglu traveled to Syria\u2019s Latakia port aboard the TCG Istanbul frigate in July, the first visit by Turkish naval vessels to the port since the Syrian civil war began. Turkish and Syrian commanders held talks on expanding military cooperation and inspected Latakia\u2019s military port as part of Ankara\u2019s support for the restructuring of Syria\u2019s armed forces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">From Israel\u2019s perspective, Shamir said, the concern is that\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2026\/06\/05\/turkey-weighs-major-defense-overhaul-iran-conflict-reshapes-warfare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Turkey could expand its military presence<\/a>\u00a0farther south, closer to Israel, a development he described as \u201cvery, very bad.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israel faced a similar problem when Russia intervened militarily in Syria in 2015. Nine days before Russian combat operations began, Netanyahu flew to Moscow with then-IDF chief Gadi Eisenkot and military intelligence chief Herzi Halevi to establish a deconfliction mechanism with President Vladimir Putin.
