<\/a>The Story You Didn\u2019t Know Behind a Famous Oslo Photograph<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\nDaniel Pomerantz<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n The below iconic photo of the Oslo era was\u00a0actually staged<\/a>. That\u2019s why it\u2019s perfect.<\/span><\/p>\n The \u201cPalestinian boy\u201d was actually a Jewish Israeli named Zemer Aloni, dressed in an \u201cold man\u201d style keffiyeh. Imagine a fake AI image of an \u201cAmerican child\u201d\u201d but wearing a bow tie and smoking a pipe \u2014 you\u2019d have to be completely naive about American culture to be fooled even for a second.<\/span><\/p>\n Photojournalist Ricki Rosen openly acknowledged that her photo was staged, calling it a \u201csymbolic illustration\u201d for\u00a0McClean\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0magazine. Yet Israel, and the world,\u00a0fell in love<\/a>\u00a0anyway \u2014 whether because we didn\u2019t see what was in front of our eyes, or perhaps because we didn\u2019t want to.<\/span><\/p>\n And\u00a0that<\/em>\u00a0is the perfect metaphor: for both the\u00a0Oslo Peace Process<\/a>\u00a0and much of the world today.<\/span><\/p>\n Rosen had to use a Jewish boy in a keffiyeh because Palestinian families (quite rightly) feared their neighbors\u00a0would kill them<\/a>\u00a0for \u201ccollaborating\u201d with the \u201czionist enemy.<\/a>\u201d As Israelis naively spoke of \u201ctaking risks for peace,\u201d the\u00a0vast majority of Palestinians<\/a>\u00a0openly spoke of turning Israel into an entirely Islamic state.<\/span><\/p>\n Both in the photograph, and in the Oslo Peace Process itself, we never really saw the Palestinians: We saw ourselves. We saw what we wanted to see. In fairness, we were imagining a worthy vision of a better future, but we were \u201cmaking peace\u201d only with our own fantasies.<\/span><\/p>\n Even today, we continue to pay a terrible price for that misstep.<\/span><\/p>\n The\u00a0vast majority of Palestinians\u00a0<\/a>supported the Oct. 7 massacre, if elections were held today Hamas would win in a landslide, and Palestinians overwhelmingly\u00a0oppose<\/em>\u00a0 But the problem is not only Israeli.<\/span><\/p>\n From US Presidents\u00a0Lyndon Johnson<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0Barack Obama<\/a>, from\u00a0George W. Bush<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0Joe Biden<\/a>, we\u2019ve sloganized about \u201cuniversal values,\u201d and the fantasy that everyone in the world thinks exactly like we do. It makes a great soundbite, but it\u2019s about as real as a staged photo of a Jewish boy in an old man\u2019s keffiyeh.<\/span><\/p>\n We forget that our \u201cuniversal values\u201d were never universal \u2014 not even to us.<\/span><\/p>\n For millennia we lived to serve kings, czars and emperors. Dreams of freedom and peace, of prosperity and personal sovereignty, became commonplace only\u00a0during the Enlightenment<\/a>: an absolutely groundbreaking new philosophy which is only slightly older than America itself \u2014 the mere blink of an eye in human history.<\/span><\/p>\n Enlightenment thought (and its consequent freedoms and democracies) spurred innovations\u00a0that have reduced<\/a>\u00a0poverty, hunger, disease, and oppression to levels never before imagined.<\/span><\/p>\n Yet even today, the Enlightenment has not taken hold everywhere.<\/span><\/p>\n One competing worldview is radical Islamism \u2014 not to be confused with\u00a0Islam<\/em>\u00a0(which is a religion),\u00a0Islamism<\/em>\u00a0is an ideology<\/a>\u00a0that envisions a\u00a0violent Islamic conquest<\/a>\u00a0of the entire world. Not all Muslims are Islamists: To the contrary, Muslims tend to be its greatest victims. Yet Islamism is nonetheless a widespread and potent force.<\/span><\/p>\n That radical ideology stems from the battle of \u201cKhaybar,\u201d\u00a0a 7th century massacre<\/a>\u00a0in which Mohammad annihilated an entire Jewish community: including mass murder, ritualistic beheadings, mass torture, mass rape, and taking captives.<\/span><\/p>\n Sound familiar? That\u2019s because it is.<\/span><\/p>\n During the Oct. 7 massacre, Palestinian terrorists, civilians, and United Nations staff\u00a0shouted<\/a>\u00a0\u201cKhaybar, Khaybar, ya Yahud!\u201d while carrying out exactly those same acts against Israeli victims.<\/span><\/p>\n Khaybar is also part of the foundational ideologies of\u00a0the Islamic Republic of Iran<\/a>,\u00a0Al Qaeda, the Taliban<\/a>, and\u00a0ISIS<\/a>. In all those states (or proto-states) the atrocities of Khaybar are recurring and commonplace. That\u2019s why it shouldn\u2019t have been surprising this week when Ahmad Vahidi, commander-in-chief of Iran\u2019s IRGC, invoked Khaybar\u00a0while explaining\u00a0<\/a>\u201cIslam can be made to rule the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n If you have clean water and plenty of food today, if you aren\u2019t in fear for your life or in agonizing pain, the Enlightenment has something to do with that. Our \u201cuniversal\u201d values, and their consequent innovations, have been the single greatest force for good in human history.
