Photo: REUTERS\/Isabel Infantes<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">For British Jews seeking medical care or working to provide it, a place meant to offer safety and compassion is increasingly becoming a source of fear, as a new investigation exposes a troubling\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2024\/03\/22\/uk-jews-demand-investigation-alleged-maltreatment-9-year-old-boy-hospital-nurses-wearing-free-palestine-pins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pattern of antisemitism, harassment, threats, and violence<\/a>\u00a0across the country\u2019s healthcare system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In a months-long project, the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA), a British charity, has exposed the scale of antisemitism confronting Jews in the UK\u2019s public healthcare system, releasing a documentary and new polling showing how harassment, discrimination, and hostility are fueling fear among both patients and staff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">CAA\u2019s new report found that\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2026\/03\/27\/uk-doctor-known-antisemitic-posts-arrested-violating-bail-charged-inviting-support-hamas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most British Jews fear<\/a>\u00a0their Jewish identity could affect their access to equal treatment within the country\u2019s National Health Service (NHS).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The report\u2019s findings also show that one in three British Jews who accessed NHS services since October 2023 felt uncomfortable because of their Jewish identity or ethnicity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">More than 40 percent of Jewish patients reported concealing their identity when receiving NHS care, fearing that being openly Jewish could expose them to discrimination or affect the standard of treatment they received.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Between October 2023 and July 2025, the Antisemitism Policy Trust, a UK organization that monitors antisemitism, recorded 99 antisemitic incidents across the country\u2019s healthcare sector, highlighting the scale of concerns facing Jewish patients and medical workers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Stephen Silverman, CAA\u2019s director of investigations and enforcement, warned that the documentary lays bare what he described as \u201cantisemitic rot\u201d embedded within the NHS, pointing to a crisis that extends far beyond isolated incidents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe anecdotal evidence presented in our film, together with the empirical data provided by our polling, demonstrate the magnitude and severity of this institutional crisis,\u201d Silverman said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The 20-minute documentary exposes a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/10\/16\/too-many-examples-starmer-announces-antisemitism-review-uks-national-health-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disturbing series of antisemitic incidents<\/a>\u00a0within the country\u2019s medical institutions, including the case of a Jewish nurse who was subjected to a Nazi salute by a colleague who kept his position even after admitting to making the gesture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In another incident, a senior professor was directly threatened with harm to his property and personal safety, while a Jewish emergency-services worker was physically attacked by a colleague.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">One of the most serious testimonies came from Jewish patient Saul Freeman, who said a surgeon subjected him to antisemitic verbal abuse during surgery, discussing the war in Gaza as the senior doctor made incisions in Freeman\u2019s forehead with a scalpel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe war in Gaza is still ongoing. They are still killing children there. You\u2019d think they would have learned lessons after what happened to them in Europe,\u201d the surgeon reportedly told Freeman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Hospitals are meant to be places of care and protection, but Freeman said they can also leave patients in one of their \u201cmost vulnerable situations,\u201d when they must place their health and safety entirely in the hands of those treating them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI was hit with real panic, because I didn\u2019t know whether he might intentionally hurt me,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Earlier this year, the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2026\/03\/24\/uk-announces-reforms-accelerate-firings-antisemitic-doctors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">British government implemented new measures<\/a>\u00a0to confront antisemitism in the NHS following an independent review that called for stronger action by health authorities to address anti-Jewish bigotry and proposed national guidance on NHS uniforms and equipment amid rising antisemitic incidents in healthcare settings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Among the review\u2019s recommendations was a requirement that leaders of all NHS provider trusts complete anti-racism training, including specific education on antisemitism, within six months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">However, there was mounting opposition from some medical organizations, with the British Islamic Medical Association and the Muslim Doctors Association arguing that the review\u2019s focus on antisemitism was too \u201cnarrow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Adding to growing tensions over antisemitism within the healthcare system, the British Medical Association (BMA) \u2014 which represents more than 200,000 doctors and medical students across the UK \u2014 voted in June in favor of scrapping the world\u2019s most widely recognized definition of antisemitism across the NHS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Healthcare professionals voted to remove the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance\u2019s\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2026\/06\/24\/british-doctors-union-votes-scrap-ihra-antisemitism-definition-uk-health-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(IHRA) working definition of antisemitism<\/a>\u00a0from the NHS, arguing that its application could limit healthcare workers\u2019 ability to express political views and ethical concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The NHS adopted IHRA\u2019s working definition of antisemitism last year after Health Secretary Wes Streeting required its use across all Department of Health and Social Care arm\u2019s-length bodies, in response to rising concerns over anti-Jewish discrimination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The NHS has been under scrutiny following several high-profile cases in the UK involving medical practitioners promoting antisemitic beliefs online and even threatening or boasting about their hate\u00a0for Jewish people as well as Israelis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The case of\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/11\/28\/uk-doctor-blames-jewish-lobby-suspended-medical-regulators-pro-hamas-antisemitic-posts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Rahmeh Aladwan<\/a>, a trainee trauma and orthopedic surgeon, particularly drew public attention. In November, Aladwan was suspended from practicing medicine in the UK for 15 months over social media posts denigrating Jews and celebrating terrorism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">British law enforcement had arrested Aladwan in October, and in March she pleaded not guilty to inciting support for Hamas, a proscribed terrorist group, and publishing material intending to stir up racial hatred.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Her suspension last year came about two weeks after\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2025\/11\/14\/uk-health-secretary-warns-chilling-antisemitism-nhs-jewish-patients-report-fear-discrimination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Streeting called it \u201cchilling\u201d\u00a0<\/a>that some members of the Jewish community fear discrimination within the NHS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Other incidents in the UK included a Jewish family fearing their London doctor\u2019s antisemitism influenced their disabled son\u2019s treatment.
