Her parents were <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Jewish\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jewish\">Jewish<\/a> and had emigrated from <a title=\"Germany\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Germany\">Germany<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-shapiro_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sophie_Spitz#cite_note-shapiro-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-austin_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sophie_Spitz#cite_note-austin-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> Her uncle, Herman Spitz, was a pathologist and inspired her to pursue a career in medicine.<sup id=\"cite_ref-austin_4-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sophie_Spitz#cite_note-austin-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> She earned her <a title=\"Doctor of Medicine\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Doctor_of_Medicine\">MD<\/a> from <a title=\"Vanderbilt University\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vanderbilt_University\">Vanderbilt University<\/a> in 1932 and commenced her residency at the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_Infirmary_for_Indigent_Women_and_Children\">New York Infirmary for Women and Children<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-austin_4-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sophie_Spitz#cite_note-austin-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Spitz met and married her husband, Arthur Allen, also a pathologist, in 1942. At around this time, she joined the Army Institute of Pathology, where she remained until 1945. It was here she developed an interest in tropical diseases and co-authored<i>Pathology of Tropical Diseases: An Atlas<\/i> with James Earle Ash.<sup id=\"cite_ref-ash_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sophie_Spitz#cite_note-ash-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Following <a title=\"World War II\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_II\">World War II<\/a>, she returned to work at the New York Infirmary and also at the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Memorial_Sloan-Kettering_Cancer_Center\">Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center<\/a>, where she described the twelve cases of what was then known as juvenile melanoma and recognized that these lesions have benign behavior despite their microscopic resemblance to <a title=\"Melanoma\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Melanoma\">melanoma<\/a>.
