T<\/span><\/span>he political <\/span><\/span>and social turmoils of <\/span><\/span>1956 <\/span><\/span>forced more than <\/span><\/span>51<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>000 <\/span><\/span>Jews out of <\/span><\/span>Poland. Nearly <\/span><\/span>37<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>000 <\/span><\/span>remained, adjusting to the new situation.<\/span><\/span>1 <\/span><\/span>The invitation by <\/span><\/span>the Polish government extended to the American Joint Distribution Committee ( JDC, popularly known as \u2018Joint\u2019) and the ORT (the Russian Organization for Rehabilitation through Training) helped to invigorate the life of the Jewish community by subsidizing training and co-operatives, which offered employment to those who had lost their government jobs. Many believed the letter of the Secretariat of the Polska Zjednoczona Partia Robotnicza (Polish United Workers\u2019 Party; PZPR) Central Committee of April <\/span><\/span>1957 <\/span><\/span>on combating nationalism and <\/span><\/span>antisemitism. However, behind the fa\u00e7ade Gomul<\/span><\/span>ka\u2019s team put into motion a number <\/span><\/span>of decisions that had a clearly restrictive effect on the Jewish community.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
