\nThe nearly universal change from wishing fellow Americans \u201cMerry Christmas<\/span>\u201d to wishing them \u201cHappy Holidays<\/span>\u201d is a very significant development in American life. Proponents of \u201cHappy Holidays<\/span>\u201d argue that it\u2019s no big deal at all, and that proponents of \u201cMerry Christmas<\/span>\u201d are making a mountain out of a molehill, especially when proponents say that the substitution of \u201cHappy Holidays<\/span>\u201d is part of a \u201cwar on Christianity<\/span>.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n

But the \u201cHappy Holidays\u201d advocates want it both ways. They dismiss opponents as hysterical while, at the same time, relentlessly pushing to rid America of \u201cMerry Christmas.\u201d So, then, which is it? Is the substitution of \u201cHappy Holidays\u201d for \u201cMerry Christmas\u201d important or not? The answer is obvious. It is very important. That\u2019s why the anti\u2013\u201cMerry Christmas\u201d crowd has worked so hard to make this greeting a thing of the past. And they have been extraordinarily successful. I have been wished \u201cHappy Holidays\u201d by every waiter and waitress in every restaurant I have dined; by every one of the young people who welcome me when I go to the gym; by every flight attendant and pilot on every one of my flights; and by every individual I have dealt with on the phone.<\/span><\/p>\n

When I respond \u201cThank you. Merry Christmas,\u201d I sometimes sense that I have actually created some tension. While many of those to whom I wish \u201cMerry Christmas\u201d may actually be happy that someone felt free to utter the C-word, all the sensitivity training that they\u2019ve had to undergo creates cognitive dissonance. \u201cChristmas\u201d has also been eliminated by many \u2014 probably the majority \u2014 of our elementary schools, high schools, and universities. Thus, for example, they no longer have a \u201cChristmas vacation,\u201d but a \u201cWinter vacation.\u201d The opponents of \u201cMerry Christmas\u201d and other uses of the word \u201cChristmas\u201d know exactly what they are doing. They are disingenuous when they dismiss defenders of \u201cMerry Christmas\u201d as fabricating some \u201cwar on Christianity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course it\u2019s a war on Christianity \u2014 or, more precisely, a war on the religious nature of America. The Left in America, like the Left in Europe, wants to create a thoroughly secular society. Unfortunately, most people do not realize that the Left believes in secularism just as fervently as religious Christians believe in Christ. That\u2019s why \u201cMerry Christmas\u201d so bothers the anti-religious Left. It is perhaps the single most blatant reminder of just how religious America is \u2014 and it must therefore be removed from public discourse. Here\u2019s a safe prediction: the ACLU and other secular activists on the Left will eventually move to have Christmas removed as a national holiday. The Left doesn\u2019t announce that its agenda is to thoroughly secularize America. Instead activists offer the multiculturalist argument \u2014 that saying Christmas, as in \u201cMerry Christmas\u201d or \u201cChristmas party\u201d or \u201cChristmas vacation\u201d is not \u201cinclusive.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This inclusiveness argument plays on Americans\u2019 highly developed sense of decency. Most Americans don\u2019t want to gratuitously offend other Americans, so the inclusiveness argument has been effective. But the argument is preposterous. Who exactly is being excluded when one wishes someone \u201cMerry Christmas?\u201d Non-Christians? I am a non-Christian. I am a Jew. Christmas is therefore no more a religious holy day for me than Ramadan. But I am an American, and Christmas is a national holiday of my country.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is therefore my holiday, though not my holy day, as much as it is for my fellow Americans who are Christian. Irving Berlin, an American Jew, wrote \u201cWhite Christmas\u201d as a celebration of an American holiday, his holiday. By not wishing me a Merry Christmas, you are not being inclusive. You are deliberately excluding me from one of my nation\u2019s national holidays. But even if Christmas weren\u2019t a national holiday, I would want companies to have Christmas parties, schools to continue to have Christmas vacations, and pilots to wish their passengers \u201cMerry Christmas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Just because I don\u2019t personally celebrate Christmas, why would I want to drop the word \u201cChristmas\u201d from public discourse when Christmas is celebrated by 90 percent of my fellow Americans? It borders on the misanthropic, not to mention mean-spirited, to want to deny nearly all of your fellow citizens the joy of having their Christmas parties called Christmas parties or to force them to replace \u201cMerry Christmas\u201d with \u201cHappy Holidays.\u201d A majority-Christian country that treats non-Christians so well deserves better. Narcissism, misanthropy, meanness, and ingratitude. That\u2019s what the Leftist campaign against \u201cMerry Christmas\u201d and \u201cChristmas parties\u201d boils down to. So, say \u201cMerry Christmas\u201d and \u201cChristmas party.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

If you don\u2019t, you\u2019re not \u201cinclusive.\u201d You\u2019re letting the real-life grinches win.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nie ma znaczenia, do jakiej religii lub grupy etnicznej nale\u017cycie; Bo\u017ce Narodzenie w Ameryce jest tak ameryka\u0144skie jak przys\u0142owiowa szarlotka. Dlatego niekt\u00f3re z najbardziej znanych i lubianych kol\u0119d zosta\u0142y napisane przez… no w\u0142a\u015bnie: zgadnijcie, przez kogo!<\/span><\/p>\n

Ale pr\u00f3by usuni\u0119cia Bo\u017cego Narodzenia ze sfery publicznej s\u0105 destrukcyjne dla naszego spo\u0142ecze\u0144stwa.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dlaczego destrukcyjne? Poniewa\u017c ca\u0142e spo\u0142ecze\u0144stwo – \u017bydzi, muzu\u0142manie, hindui\u015bci, buddy\u015bci, atei\u015bci, jak i chrze\u015bcijanie – wszyscy korzystaj\u0105 z dobroci i rado\u015bci, kt\u00f3re przynosz\u0105 ze sob\u0105 te \u015bwi\u0119ta.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mojej ortodoksyjnej \u017cydowskiej rodzinie nigdy nie przysz\u0142o do g\u0142owy, aby nie cieszy\u0107 si\u0119 z tej okazji. W naszym domu by\u0142o tradycj\u0105 ogl\u0105danie Pasterki z Watykanu w ka\u017cd\u0105 wigili\u0119 (chyba, \u017ce by\u0142 to pi\u0105tek, a wi\u0119c Szabat, gdy nie wolno by\u0142o ogl\u0105da\u0107 telewizji). To nic wi\u0119cej ni\u017c kolejny, destrukcyjny wytw\u00f3r lat sze\u015b\u0107dziesi\u0105tych i siedemdziesi\u0105tych XX wieku, gdy lewica zdominowa\u0142a du\u017ce obszary kultury.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jednym ze sposob\u00f3w, w kt\u00f3rym tego dokona\u0142a, polega\u0142 na “wielokulturowo\u015bci” – metodzie stosowanej przez lewic\u0119 przy podziale Amerykan\u00f3w wed\u0142ug religii, pochodzenia etnicznego, rasy i kraju pochodzenia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Drugim sposobem by\u0142o d\u0105\u017cenie do sekularyzacji Ameryki – co oznacza, przede wszystkim, usuni\u0119cie tak wielu odniesie\u0144 do chrze\u015bcija\u0144stwa, jak to tylko mo\u017cliwe.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lewica stale kpi z pogl\u0105du, \u017ce istnieje wojna z Bo\u017cym Narodzeniem, kt\u00f3ry to zwrot lewicowych publicy\u015bci niemal bior\u0105 w cudzys\u0142\u00f3w tak, jakby to by\u0142 fa\u0142sz.<\/span><\/p>\n

Najbardziej oczywistym i wszechobecnym przyk\u0142adem tej wojny, jest zast\u0105pienie “Merry Christmas” (“Weso\u0142ych \u015awi\u0105t Bo\u017cego Narodzenia”) przez “Happy Holidays” niemal w ca\u0142ej kulturze. Pracownikom wi\u0119kszo\u015bci sklep\u00f3w nakazano, by nie wymienia\u0107 w \u017cyczeniach Bo\u017cego Narodzenia. W rezultacie, dzi\u015b w wi\u0119kszo\u015bci Ameryki \u017cyczenie komu\u015b obcemu “Merry Christmas” jest niemal aktem odwagi.<\/span><\/p>\n
