In 2015, the Polish film \u201cIda,\u201d about a young soon-to-be nun who learns her parents were Jews killed during the war, took home the best foreign film Oscar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Set in Auschwitz in 1944, \u201cSon of Saul\u201d tells the story of Saul Auslander, a Jewish inmate forced to escort his fellow prisoners to the gas chambers and help to dispose of their remains. The title role is played by Geza Rohrig, a Hungarian poet and observant Jew who now lives in New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The film was heavily favored to win on Sunday, having already claimed the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in May and the Golden Globe for best foreign film in January. On Saturday, it won the prize for best international film at the Independent Spirit Awards in Los Angeles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In other Jewish-related wins, Asif Kapadia\u2019s Amy Winehouse portrait, \u201cAmy,\u201d took best documentary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Charles Randolph, husband of Israeli actress Mili Avital, won the Academy Award of Best Adapted Screenplay for the film \u201cThe Big Short,\u201d along with Adam McKay. Accepting the award, Randolph dropped some Hebrew on the big stage telling his wife, \u201cI love you,\u201d in her native tongue.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"content\" class=\" content-alignment&lt;br \/&gt;&lt;br \/&gt; \">\n<div id=\"watch-description\" class=\"yt-uix-button-panel\">\n<div id=\"watch-description-text\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uZ9KAbpNOw0\" width=\"680\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Meanwhile \u201cSpotlight,\u201d a film about the efforts of (Jewish) Boston Globe editor Marty Baron to unearth a covered-up child sex abuse scandal in the Catholic Church, picked up the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and won the night\u2019s big prize of Best Picture, beating out the favored frontier epic \u201cThe Revenant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After going home empty-handed four times previously, Leonardo DiCaprio won his first Oscar, for a best actor in \u201cThe Revenant\u201d \u2014 a gruff, grunting performance that traded little on the actor\u2019s youthful charisma. DiCaprio, greeted with a standing ovation, took the moment to talk about climate change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet us not take our planet for granted,\u201d he said. \u201cI do not take tonight for granted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His director, Inarritu, won back-to-back directing awards after the triumph last year of \u201cBirdman.\u201d It\u2019s a feat matched by only two other filmmakers: John Ford and Joseph L. Mankiewicz. \u201cThe Revenant\u201d also won best cinematography for Emmanuel Lubezki, who became the first cinematographer to win three times in a row (following wins for \u201cGravity\u201d and \u201cBirdman\u201d), and only the seventh to three-peat in Oscar history.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1348668\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.timesofisrael.com\/uploads\/2016\/02\/063_512950162-635x357.jpg\" alt=\"The cast of &quot;Spotlight&quot; accept the Best Motion Picture of the Year award onstage during the 88th Annual Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre, February 28, 2016.
