Photo: Laura Ben-David\/Courtesy of Shavei Israel.\" width=\"50%\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Five women who are among the few remaining traceable descendants of China\u2019s ancient Kaifeng Jewish community made aliyah to Israel this week.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cOur ancestors are Jews\u2026I have to be here,\u201d said one of the new immigrants, Yue Ting, a 25-year-old primary school teacher.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The women plan to formally convert to Judaism and become Israeli citizens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Kaifeng\u2019s Jewish population was established by traveling Jewish merchants from the Middle East and Persia who settled in China in the 7th century. The community once had as many as 5,000 members, but today that number has dwindled to about 1,000. The community\u2019s last synagogue was destroyed two centuries ago, and its members have since lost many of their connections to Jewish traditions. Yet the community never completely let go of its Jewish roots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cAs a child, my parents and people around me always called me \u2018Jewish girl,&#8217;\u201d Yue told NBC News. \u201cI didn\u2019t understand the meaning of Jewish at that time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWhen I was a little girl, my father and my grandfather taught me we are Jews,\u201d added Li Yuan, 26.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Michael Freund \u2014 founder of the Shavei Israel organization, which helps members of so-called \u201clost\u201d Jewish communities from around the world make aliyah \u2014 has helped 19 Kaifeng Jews move to Israel since 2006.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cJudaism is not a recognized religion in China\u2026in the eyes of the government they are Han Chinese just like anyone else,\u201d Freund said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI know I am Jewish,\u201d said Yue. \u201cTo be Jewish, I have to go back to Israel\u2026I\u2019ve been waiting for this time for a long time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr style=\"height: 15px; background: #d0e6fa; width: 710px;\" \/>\n<div id=\"content\" class=\" content-alignment&lt;br \/&gt;&lt;br \/&gt; \">\n<div id=\"watch-description\" class=\"yt-uix-button-panel\">\n<div id=\"watch-description-text\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"> twoje uwagi, linki, wlasne artykuly, lub wiadomosci przeslij do: <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"mailto:webmaster@reunion68.com\">webmaster@reunion68.com<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width: 710px;\" \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>5 Women From Ancient Chinese Jewish Community Immigrate to Israel JNS.org From left to right, five new Chinese immigrants to Israel\u2014 Li Yuan, Yue Ting, Li Jing, Li Chengjin, and Gao Yichen \u2014stand in front of the Western Wall.
