After opening a luggage store in Beverly Hills, he spent 40 years trying to make a film about his saviour. In 1951 he approached director Fritz Lang but it didn\u2019t work out. Later on he convinced Thomas Keneally, an Australian author, to write the novel \u201cSchindler\u2019s Ark\u201d, in 1982.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>2.<\/strong> Although Steven Spielberg was one of the very first to acquire the rights, he didn\u2019t feel he was mature enough to direct the movie so he tried to engage other directors. Roman Polanski felt too close to the story as he himself survived the Holocaust as a child in Krakow, however, he did direct the 2002 \u201cThe Pianist\u201d, another true life Holocaust story. Same thing happened when Martin Scorsese was asked to give it a go but he insisted that the film should be made by a Jewish director.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100%\" class=\"td-attachment-page-image aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.warhistoryonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/schindlers-list-4.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>3.<\/strong> Although a number of extremely famous names were up on the list for Schindler\u2019s part in the film, Spielber didn\u2019t want a movie-star actor like Kevin Costner, Mel Gibson or Warren Beatty. Instead he chose Liam Neeson after seeing him in a Broadway production of \u201cAnna Christie\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>4.<\/strong> Branko Lustig became the producer of \u201cSchindler\u2019s List\u201d after showing Spielberg his tattooed serial number from Auschwitz on his arm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>5.<\/strong> For the part of Amon Goeth, Spielberg chose Ralph Fiennes after seeing his performance in \u201cWuthering Heights\u201d in 1992 and \u201cA Dangerous Man: Lawrence After Arabia.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>6.<\/strong> Spielberg agreed to direct the film but only after shooting \u201cJurassic Park\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>7.<\/strong> Fiennes had to put on 28 pounds to play the part of Goeth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>8.<\/strong> Spielberg didn\u2019t accept to be paid for directing the film, saying that it would be \u201cblood money\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>9.<\/strong> When he filmed at Auschwitz, Spielberg didn\u2019t shot inside the camps, out of respect for the people who died there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #808080;\">A photograph of Oskar Schindler (center) <\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #808080;\">and what is thought to be the original list.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"50%\" class=\"td-attachment-page-image alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.warhistoryonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/1426074748668.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>10.<\/strong> Spielberg wanted to shoot the film in black and white because it reminded him of the black and white documentary footage of the Holocaust, the Moviefone reports.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>11.<\/strong> Most of the film was shot in the Jewish ghetto of Krakow, however, the Plaszow concentration camp was also built on the edge of the town.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>13.<\/strong> During an interview, Spielberg confessed that \u201cThe most moving thing that happened for me was on Passover. We had Passover at the hotel, and all the young German actors who were playing Nazis came in with yarmulkes and haggadahs [Passover prayer books] and sat with the Israeli actors and took part in the Passover service. I wept like a baby.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>14.<\/strong> Spielberg spent his days shooting \u201cSchindler\u2019s List\u201d and his evenings editing footage from \u201cJurassic Park\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>15.<\/strong> In an interview with Time magazine in 2013, Lusting recalled one of the most painful moments for him; that time he had to recruit children to sing songs as they were being herded onto trucks .<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>16.<\/strong> There were parts of the shoot Spielberg could not watch without breaking into tears. One of them was when some of the Polish extras playing concentration camp prisoners had to be stripped off and humiliated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100%\" class=\"td-attachment-page-image aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.warhistoryonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/maxresdefault.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>17.<\/strong> Spielberg insisted to star the Shoah Foundation and record the testimony of numerous Holocaust survivors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>18.<\/strong> During the shoot, Spielberg captured the image of a little girl in a red coat, one of the very few colored scenes in the film. The actress who played the little girl, Oliwia Dabrowska \u2013 3 years old at the time \u2013 had to promise the director she will not watch the film until she was 18.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"40%\" class=\"td-attachment-page-image alignright\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.warhistoryonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/23289469.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>19.<\/strong> There was a real life little girl in a red coat, who survived the Holocaust and wrote a book based on her life, \u201cThe Girl in the Red Coat,\u201d in 2002.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>20.<\/strong> She did watch it when she was 11, and it was traumatizing. However she watched it again at 18; \u201cI realized I had been part of something I could be proud of Spielberg was right: I had to grow up to watch the film.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>20.<\/strong> The film was made on a $22 million budget, earned $96 million in North America and $225 million overseas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">21. During the Warsaw premiere, Spielberg picked up the saxophone and played five or six minutes of traditional Eastern-European Jewish music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>22.<\/strong> Neeson and Fiennes were also seen together in \u201cClash of the Titans\u201d in 2010 and 2012\u2019s \u201cWrath of the Titans.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>23.<\/strong> \u201cSchindler\u2019s List\u201d was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and won seven of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>24.<\/strong> There were also some complaints. E.g.
