He first specialized in medieval history and military history, and studied from 1993 to 1998 at the <a title=\"Hebrew University of Jerusalem\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hebrew_University_of_Jerusalem\">Hebrew University of Jerusalem<\/a>. He completed his doctorate at <a title=\"Jesus College, Oxford\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jesus_College,_Oxford\">Jesus College, Oxford<\/a>, in 2002 under the supervision of <a class=\"new\" title=\"Steven J. Gunn (page does not exist)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Steven_J._Gunn&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Steven J. Gunn<\/a> . From 2003 to 2005 he pursued <a title=\"Postdoctoral researcher\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Postdoctoral_researcher\">Postdoctoral<\/a> studies in history, as a <a title=\"Yad Hanadiv\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yad_Hanadiv\">Yad Hanadiv<\/a> Fellow.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yuval_Noah_Harari#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Since then, he has published numerous books and articles, including <i>Special Operations in the Age of Chivalry, 1100\u20131550<\/i>;<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yuval_Noah_Harari#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> <i>The Ultimate Experience: Battlefield Revelations and the Making of Modern War Culture, 1450\u20132000<\/i>;<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yuval_Noah_Harari#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> \u201cThe Concept of \u2018Decisive Battles\u2019 in World History\u201d;<sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yuval_Noah_Harari#cite_note-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup> and \u201cArmchairs, Coffee and Authority: Eye-witnesses and Flesh-witnesses Speak about War, 1100-2000\u201d.<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yuval_Noah_Harari#cite_note-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>He now specializes in <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"World History\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_History\">World History<\/a> and <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Macro-historical\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Macro-historical\">macro-historical<\/a> processes. His research focuses on macro-historical questions such as: What is the relation between history and biology? What is the essential difference between Homo sapiens and other animals? Is there justice in history? Does history have a direction? Did people become happier as history unfolded?<\/p>\n<p>His most recent book is titled <i><a title=\"Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sapiens:_A_Brief_History_of_Humankind\">Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind<\/a><\/i> (originally published in Hebrew under the title <i>A Brief History of Mankind<\/i>, and later translated into close to 30 languages).<sup id=\"cite_ref-Telegraph_Payne_7-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yuval_Noah_Harari#cite_note-Telegraph_Payne-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup> The book surveys the entire length of <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Human history\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Human_history\">human history<\/a>, from the evolution of <a title=\"Homo sapiens\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Homo_sapiens\">Homo sapiens<\/a> in the Stone Age up to the political and technological revolutions of the 21st century. The <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Hebrew\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hebrew\">Hebrew<\/a> edition has become a <a title=\"Bestseller\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bestseller\">bestseller<\/a> in Israel. It has generated much interest both in the academic community and among the general public and has turned Harari into an instant <a title=\"Celebrity\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Celebrity\">celebrity<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yuval_Noah_Harari#cite_note-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup> <a title=\"YouTube\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/YouTube\">YouTube<\/a> <a title=\"Video clip\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Video_clip\">Video clips<\/a> of Harari\u2019s Hebrew lectures on the history of the world have been viewed by tens of thousands of <a title=\"Israelis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Israelis\">Israelis<\/a>;<sup id=\"cite_ref-9\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yuval_Noah_Harari#cite_note-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup> He is also giving a free online course in English titled <i>A Brief History of Humankind<\/i>. More than 100,000 people throughout the world have already taken this course.<\/p>\n<p>Harari twice won the <a class=\"new\" title=\"Polonsky Prize (page does not exist)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Polonsky_Prize&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Polonsky Prize<\/a> for Creativity and Originality, in 2009 and 2012. In 2011 he won the <a title=\"Society for Military History\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Society_for_Military_History\">Society for Military History<\/a>\u2019s Moncado Award for outstanding articles in military history. In 2012 he was elected to the Young Israeli Academy of Sciences. In 2015 Sapiens was selected by <a class=\"external text\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/mark-zuckerberg\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook<\/a>, for his <a class=\"external text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ayearofbooks\" rel=\"nofollow\">online book club<\/a>. But for Israeli historian Yuval Noah Harari, being included on Gates\u2019 \u201c5 Books to Read This Summer\u201d is definitely a new feather in his cap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThis summer, my recommended reading list has a good dose of books with science and math at their core. But there\u2019s no science or math to my selection process. The following five books are simply ones that I loved, made me think in new ways, and kept me up reading long past when I should have gone to sleep,\u201d Gates blogged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Harari, a lecturer in the department of history at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, offers up a fresh perspective on the history of our species. His book, first published in 2014, is being translated into almost 30 languages, according to his website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In his book, Harari argues that capitalism is the most successful religion ever invented; he calls the treatment of animals in modern agriculture probably the worst crime in history, and suggests that people were happier before we started farming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cBoth Melinda and I read this one, and it has sparked lots of great conversations at our dinner table,\u201d writes Gates on his blog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cHarari takes on a daunting challenge: to tell the entire history of the human race in just 400 pages. He also writes about our species today and how artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, and other technologies will change us in the future.
