that causes problems.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Seals in reference to King Hezekiah, lower-level royal officials and even of a woman named Elihana bat Gael serve as proof of a 3,000-year connection between ancient Israel and the country we know today, adds Orenstein.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to him, these discoveries present problems, however, for people who are committed to an opposing agenda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cUnfortunately today, much of what you can call \u2018Palestinian nationalism\u2019 or \u2018Palestinian identity\u2019 is based on the narrative that the Jewish people have no legitimate ties to this land&#8230; that we\u2019re a bunch of white Europeans,\u201d says Orenstein. \u201cThat would then make excavations in the City of David particular problematic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Petitions to recognize the Temple Mount as an exclusively Islamic site have so far been met with disapproval.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The World Heritage Committee postponed its decision last month to vote on a recently proposed resolution that would refer to the contested site only by al-Haram al-Sharif, its Muslim name.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Orenstein\u2019s hope is that enough committee members would strike down such a proposal, using City of David finds as his main piece of evidence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThis isn\u2019t a Jewish issue, it\u2019s not a Christian issue, even though it\u2019s denying these events when they\u2019re so clearly proven from an archeological perspective,\u201d says Orenstein. \u201cBut really, it\u2019s an attack on truth, because if you can deny objective truth&#8230; tomorrow it\u2019ll be about something else.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Although October\u2019s decision is yet to be made, backing from UNESCO director- general Irina Bokova could tip the scale in Israel\u2019s favor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cTo deny or conceal any of the Jewish, Christian or Muslim traditions undermines the integrity of the site, and runs counter to the reasons that justified its inscription in 1981,\u201d Bokova wrote on UNESCO\u2019s website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">As for Tisha Be\u2019av, the enormous yet elegant Herodian stones found at the foot of the ancient temple\u2019s primary entrance do not only evoke a sense of loss and mourning, but of a compelling case for Judaism\u2019s relationship with the site.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cOn one hand, we\u2019re standing in an area where the destruction of Jerusalem happened, and yet at the same time, we\u2019re standing in a place where we see the rebirth, and the return, and the redemption of Israel,\u201d says Orenstein.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cSo yes, we have a lot to remember and there are many lessons that we still need to learn&#8230; but at the same time we\u2019re growing, and thriving, and we\u2019re home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr style=\"height: 15px; background: #d0e6fa; width: 710px;\" \/>\n<div id=\"content\" class=\" content-alignment&lt;br \/&gt;&lt;br \/&gt;
