Photo: Wikimedia Commons<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Attacks against members of the Jewish community at the University of California, Berkeley are not treated with the same gravity as those against other minority groups, the head of the school\u2019s Jewish Student Union (JSU) told the independent student-run newspaper The Daily Californian on Sunday<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">JSU President Josh Woznica said that the latter \u201cget identified and the administrations send out something and there are no questions asked\u2026 [but] a hate crime is a hate crime, and when the administration makes a statement about one thing, it should be the same statement as another thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">UC Berkeley, Woznica said, \u201chas its fair share of antisemitic incidents.\u201d However, the challenge of identifying Jew-hatred on campus is becoming increasingly muddled because many of the attacks are \u201cmasked in the form of anti-Zionism and anti-Israel activity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Woznica\u2019s comments follow another recent controversy at UC Berkeley surrounding an anti-Israel course, titled, \u201cPalestine: A Settler Colonial Analysis,\u201d which, as The Algemeiner reported, was suspended and later reinstated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The class \u2014 which was widely condemned by major campus watchdog groups as a classic example of antisemitic anti-Zionism \u2014 led to a worsening climate for the school\u2019s Jewish community. As reported by The Algemeiner, days after the course was reinstated, antisemitic posters appeared on campus warning \u201cnon-Jews\u201d against \u201cJewish bullies\u201d and pro-Israel \u201cadvocates [of] a foreign state.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><span style=\"color: #808080;\">An an<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/49yzp92imhtx8radn224z7y1-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/uc-berkeley-poster-antisemitism-300x169.jpg\" width=\"50%\" \/>tisemitic poster at UC Berkeley. Photo: Nanette Asimov\/Twitter.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Woznica said that the course syllabus \u201cdefinitely [contains]\u2026antisemitic tropes,\u201d and expressed concern that both its sponsor and teacher are associated with the \u201coutwardly anti-Israel group\u201d Students for Justice in Palestine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to a 2015 campus watchdog report, UC Berkeley ranked second among 100 schools popular with Jewish students at which there is antisemitic activity. While Jewish students at UC Berkeley \u201cdon\u2019t walk around feeling uncomfortable and like they can\u2019t live a strong Jewish life,\u201d Woznica said, there is still more work to be done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Despite the history of antisemitism at UC Berkeley, prospective Jewish students and their parents should still consider the school an option, he said. \u201cLook, if you\u2019re not going to send your strong Jewish kid here, who\u2019s going to fight the fight? We need those students to come. We can\u2019t take 10 steps back. You\u2019ve got to fight it full force. If Jewish students don\u2019t come here, it could be an issue.
