(AP\/File)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>A group of New Jersey law students claim to have uncovered bombshell new evidence in one of the most infamous espionage cases of the 20th century, including an FBI document they say may indicate an innocent woman was executed<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The case is about Julius and Ethel Rosenberg \u2013 American citizens executed in 1953 for passing atomic secrets to the Soviet Union. Since then, evidence has appeared to confirm that Julius was a spy, but his wife\u2019s role has long been disputed. Students from the Seton Hall University School of Law Center for Policy &amp; Research took up the case, and started from the beginning, said Professor Mark Denbeaux.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI never wanted to re-litigate the case,\u201d author of the report, Seton Hall Law Professor and Director of the Center for Policy &amp; Research Mark Denbeaux told FoxNews.com. \u201cThe point was to do what law students should learn to do: go back to the evidence and find out what is there \u2013then work our way back and see how it evolved.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px currentColor; color: #000080; text-transform: none; line-height: inherit; text-indent: 0px; letter-spacing: normal; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: underline; word-spacing: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: normal; box-sizing: border-box; orphans: 2; widows: 2; font-stretch: inherit; background-color: #ffffff; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-numeric: inherit; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px;\" href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.proofpoint.com\/v2\/url?u=http-3A__law.shu.edu_ethelrosenberg&amp;d=DwMF-g&amp;c=cnx1hdOQtepEQkpermZGwQ&amp;r=rS7oEhBGU-wyiNAxzsnVidI5aQueaSAgQ4eVPTYFgWY&amp;m=ATitP0GStPL4hAlSBwa2MuO4169GzrbWxk5reC7l85Y&amp;s=xUfDnaiShFl8UvgSDJE0pOs0a-2xG6tvzmCVRgDbkUk&amp;e=\" target=\"_blank\"><b>LICK HERE TO READ THE REPORT<\/b><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What they found was that Ethel Rosenberg may have been charged merely to squeeze a confession out of her husband, a dramatic development that affirmed the old suspicions of Denbeaux\u2019s father, the son of George Patton\u2019s combat chaplain. The elder Denbeaux, who helped liberate two concentration camps, always believed that Ethel Rosenberg\u2019s execution was tied to her religious beliefs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cMy father always assumed the Rosenbergs wouldn\u2019t have been executed if they weren\u2019t Jewish,\u201d Denbeaux told FoxNews.com. \u201cIf they were waspy Protestants, this wouldn\u2019t have happened.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Seton Hall Law Center uncovered an internal FBI memo dating July 17, 1950 that determined there was \u201cinsufficient evidence\u201d to arrest Ethel Rosenberg, but that she could be used as \u201ca lever against her husband\u201d to pressure him into confessing. According to the report, additional documents from the FBI and Department of Justice repeatedly note the absence of evidence implicating Ethel in the conspiracy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The project also discovered that in January of 1951, an assistant attorney general informed a Congressional Committee that Julius Rosenberg was a \u201ctough nut to crack\u201d and that authorities needed to \u201cseverely threaten Ethel in order to make Julius cooperate.\u201d This prompted prosecutors to develop evidence in the form of \u201ccontinually evolving\u201d witness statements, which ultimately led to Ethel\u2019s execution, according to the students\u2019 report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The prosecutor told lawmakers Julius Rosenberg was \u201cthe keystone to a lot of other potential espionage agents,\u201d and that \u201cif we can really break him, that he will open the gates and give us information which would lead to a lot of other individuals.\u201d The Assistant Attorney General reportedly informed the Committee that it was \u201cimportant\u201d that Julius be \u201cunder the shadow of a death penalty,\u201d which \u201cis about the only thing you can use as a lever on these people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The investigation concluded that the U.S. government\u2019s case against Ethel Rosenberg was \u201cbasically non-existent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWhen we began, all of us assumed that Ethel could not have been executed with so little evidence. By the end we all realized that her execution (and probably her conviction) was not the result of evidence but because of the prosecution\u2019s failed gamble against Julius,\u201d Research Fellow and co-author of the report Elizabeth Mancuso said in a statement. \u201cThe government\u2019s manipulation of familial relationships to secure a conviction is just as disturbing today as it should have been 60 years ago.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Rosenbergs\u2019 sons, who have long sought to clear their parents\u2019 names, are hoping for a proclamation from President Obama to exonerating their mother in the last days of his term.
