So when he spotted an item called \u201cAdvice for Women and Young Women \u2013 Before and After the Wedding,\u201d he knew he had to get it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Originally written in French by a medical school professor, an article in Haaretz explains, the pamphlet was translated and published in Yiddish in 1930s Warsaw. While by today\u2019s standards it can\u2019t exactly be called feminist, Finkelman points out that the very fact of blunt discussion about sex was quite progressive for its time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">But how it\u2019s actually discussed leaves something to be desired. Take what the doctor calls the \u201chorrible disease of nymphomania\u201d: the doctor warns that a rejected woman \u201cbecomes truly wild. Her eyes sparkle in anger and almost burst out of their sockets\u201d as she veers toward \u201ctotal insanity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Other elements are straight-up retrograde. In a section on women whose health problems disappeared upon getting married, he writes: \u201cThe wedding without a doubt improves health\u2026The wedding is the best medicine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Intrigued?
