The Austrian National Union of Students on Friday condemned the boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement against Israel as antisemitic, and urged for it to not be given funds or event space.<\/span><\/p>\n

The resolution received near unanimous support, with no votes against it and one abstention.<\/span><\/p>\n

The union also adopted a version of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance\u2019s definition of antisemitism, which includes \u201cdenying the Jewish people their right to self-determination.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Leaders of the BDS movement have repeatedly gone on record claiming that Israel has no right to exist.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Austrian Union of Jewish Students applauded the passage of the resolution, saying in a statement on Friday, \u201cThis has been a big step in the fight against antisemitism and we are very happy that after our lobbying effort almost all factions have supported the motion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The group extended a \u201cspecial thanks\u201d to the Greens and Alternative Students (GRAS) for \u201ctheir continuing support in the fight against all antisemitism.<\/span><\/p>\n

In its own statement, the GRAS group condemned \u201cthe antisemitic BDS campaign and its spread in higher education,\u201d and committed to speaking out against antisemitism.<\/span><\/p>\n

In August 2016, the student council at Gemany\u2019s prestigious Leipzig University \u2014 one of the oldest universities in the world \u2014 passed a resolution denouncing the BDS movement, saying its objective \u201cfits seamlessly with the antisemitic campaigns of past centuries, and explicitly with that of the National Socialism; Nazi slogan \u2018Don\u2019t Buy From the Jews\u2019 is once again being expressed here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Also last week, first-year candidates running for College Council at the University of Chicago \u201cgenerally disagreed\u201d with the body\u2019s April 2016 resolution supporting BDS, the school\u2019s newspaper reported.<\/span><\/p>\n

One candidate said that advocacy for \u201cspecific international political issues\u201d did not fit into the council\u2019s mandate, while another noted that \u201cBDS cripples the regional economy, hurting Jews and Palestinians alike.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
