Photo: Robert Livingston.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Jewish students at the University of California, Berkeley called on administrators to take action against a professor with a \u201chistory of anti-Semitism\u201d on Thursday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The coalition \u2014 comprised of the Chabad Jewish Student Group, Bears for Israel, Berkeley Hillel, and Tikvah: Students for Israel \u2014 expressed \u201coutrage\u201d over the \u201cpromotion of hatred and intolerance\u201d by Hatem Bazian, a lecturer in the department of ethnic studies who shared a tweet in July accusing a \u201cZionist\u201d of \u201capartheid, occupation, ethnic cleansing, genocide, theft Palestinian land+resources+body-organs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The tweet also included an image of a stereotype of a religious Jew, saying, \u201cMom, look! I is chosen! I can now kill, rape, smuggle organs &amp; steal the land of Palestinians *yay* #Ashke-Nazi.\u201d A second image featured North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un wearing a kippah and telling President Donald Trump that he needs to start receiving \u201cwelfare\u201d because he \u201cconverted all of North Korea to Judaism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Bazian has since apologized for sharing the \u201cwrong and offensive\u201d images, which UC Berkeley said in a statement \u201ccross the line\u201d into antisemitism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cAs a Palestinian, my issue is with Zionism, a settler colonial movement and Israel\u2019s policies directed at Palestinians under occupation and \u2026 not with Judaism or Jews, as diverse communities,\u201d he wrote last month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Bazian is a co-founder of the anti-Zionist campus group Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and a chairman of American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), one of SJP\u2019s leading backers. AMP recently launched a campaign urging supporters to email UC Berkeley Chancellor Carol Christ in support of Bazian, who they claim has been targeted by a \u201cvicious campaign\u201d by \u201czealous pro-Israel groups,\u201d despite renouncing the antisemitic image.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">However, according to the coalition of Jewish students at UC Berkeley, Bazian\u2019s apology was \u201clacking at best.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cHe chose to use his statement as yet another opportunity to attack Israelis, tokenize Jews, and whitewash his history of anti-Semitism,\u201d they wrote. \u201cHe also expressed no regret for the anti-Asian bigotry contained in the post he retweeted. Frankly, we question the sincerity of his apology and do not believe he has fully acknowledged the damage he caused.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The students also noted that this was not the first time Bazian shared content accused of promoting anti-Jewish hate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cBazian\u2019s record both recently and in years past demonstrates a consistent pattern of spreading or justifying anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry,\u201d they charged, pointing to his past actions on and off social media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">These include sharing an image comparing Israelis to Nazis, insinuating that Jews control UC Berkeley, tweeting that the \u201cIsrael lobby manufactured [the] UK Labour Party\u2019s anti-Semitism crisis,\u201d and promoting a video in which Israeli soldiers were accused of killing \u201cyoung Palestinians for their organs\u201d \u2014 a charge the Jewish students called \u201ca modern day blood libel which echoes the hateful tweet that came to light last week.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWhile we fully support academic freedom and free speech, we believe Bazian\u2019s record is severe enough to warrant more than just condemnation,\u201d the students wrote. They noted that there is a \u201cprecedent for the removal of non-tenured faculty who promote hate on social media and elsewhere,\u201d pointing to such dismissals at Oberlin College, the University of Tampa, and John Jay College.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Dan Mogulof, assistant vice chancellor at UC Berkeley, told The Algemeiner on Friday that \u201cthe additional information provided by the students raises important issues that merit further review, reflection and discussion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cAs a next step we expect to schedule a meeting with the students to ensure we have the best possible understanding of their concerns and positions, while also ensuring there is a shared and accurate understanding of University policies and practices related to faculty conduct,\u201d Mogulof added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cAs their letter suggests, the First Amendment of the Constitution protects even the most odious, hateful forms of speech,\u201d he continued, \u201cand as a public university, our legal obligations in the context of the First Amendment are far different than those of the private institutions they refer to in their letter.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">He said that UC Berkeley does, however, remain \u201cmindful\u201d of the University of California Regents\u2019 \u201cPrinciples Against Intolerance,\u201d which call for \u201cmutual respect and civility within debate and dialogue,\u201d regardless of any \u201clegal right to speak in a manner that reflects bias, stereotypes, prejudice and intolerance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr style=\"background: #d0e6fa; width: 710px; height: 15px;\" \/>\n<div id=\"content\" class=\" content-alignment&lt;br \/&gt;&lt;br \/&gt; \">\n<div id=\"watch-description\" class=\"yt-uix-button-panel\">\n<div id=\"watch-description-text\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"> twoje uwagi, linki, wlasne artykuly, lub wiadomosci przeslij do: <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"mailto:webmaster@reunion68.com\">webmaster@reunion68.com<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width: 710px;\" \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jewish Groups at UC Berkeley Call for Removal of Professor Who Shared Antisemitic Images Shiri Moshe Hatem Bazian speaking at the United nations Plaza in San Francisco, California.
