As both editor and performer, Amani Al-Khatahtbeh endorsed blood libels against Jews and 9\/11 Truther conspiracies<\/strong><\/p>\n

Amani Al-Khatahtbeh, founder and editor-in-chief of\u00a0MuslimGirl<\/a><\/span><\/span>\u2014an online magazine where \u201cMuslim women talk back\u201d to combat \u201cmisconceptions surrounding Islam\u201d\u2014made headlines last week when she turned down an award from multinational beauty giant Revlon because of the company\u2019s engagement with Israeli actress Gal Gadot.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI cannot accept this award from Revlon with Gal Gadot as the ambassador,\u201d Al-Khatahtbeh announced in a\u00a0statement<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0on Twitter. \u201cHer vocal support of the Israel Defense Forces\u2019 actions in Palestine goes against MuslimGirl\u2019s morals and values.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The rejection, of course, is well within Al-Khatahtbeh\u2019s rights, but it\u2019s also an invitation to examine precisely what MuslimGirl\u2019s morals and values truly are. A good place to start may be a\u00a0piece<\/a>,<\/strong><\/span> published by MuslimGirl in 2016, entitled \u201cIsrael\u2019s Organ Harvesting and the UK\u2019s BDS Movement\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Written by \u201cYelena,\u201d a mysterious doula from San Francisco, the piece is mostly a rehash of\u00a0professional anti-Semite<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0Alison Weir\u2019s\u00a0riff<\/a>\u00a0on the blood-libel\u2014a conspiracy theory in which Israel occupies Palestinian territory in order to murder the locals and loot their body parts. But like all knockoffs, the piece\u2019s craftsmanship is poor, so Yelena\u2019s version is helpful in that it sheds Weir\u2019s usual scrupulosness and directly cites anti-Semites as sources. What sources does \u201cYelena\u201d offer to document the ghoulish crimes of which she accuses the Jewish state? These include Iran\u2019s\u00a0PressTV<\/a>and 9\/11 Truther Michel Chussodovsky\u2019s conspiracist web site,\u00a0GlobalResearch<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. Both are classic \u201cfake news\u201d media, distributing\u00a0anti-Jewish<\/span><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0conspiracy theories<\/span><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0by the shipping container throughout the Internet. Most troubling, however, is the article\u2019s quotation of retired Cal State psychology professor\u00a0Kevin MacDonald<\/a>, a darling of far-Right anti-Semites, who couches standard white-supremacist teachings about Jewish \u201cwhite genocide\u201d in trappings of evolutionary psychology. Here\u2019s what \u201cYelena\u201d took from MacDonald: \u201cOrganized American Jewish lobbying groups and deeply committed Jews in the media are behind the pro-Israel U.S. foreign policy that is leading to war against virtually the entire Arab world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, even the most scrupulous publications sometime publish regrettable pieces, although it\u2019s hard to imagine how Al-Khatahtbeh, in her role as editor-in-chief, could let such blatant hate speech see the light of day. And it\u2019s even harder to absolve Al-Khatahtbeh of responsibility considering that she had also published, in her past capacity as editor of Rutgers University\u2019s Daily Targum, a\u00a0piece<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0by a student named Colleen Jolly which\u00a0complained<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0about the \u201cJewish nature\u201d of Hillel and Jewish misuse of money.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sadly, Al-Khatahtbeh\u2019s history of bigotry doesn\u2019t end there. In a 2012\u00a0video<\/a>, which Al-Khatahtbeh has apparently tried to scrub off of her YouTube account but which remains archived online, she is seen boarding a C Train in Manhattan and delivering a spoken word piece called, \u201cThis is a Verbal Vendetta.\u201d Spitting out angry and vaguely threatening lines like \u201cYou made us all one face of terror \/ You created the problems ensuing \/ And the mask you placed upon us, will be your own undoing,\u201d Al-Khatahtbeh soon starts talking about \u201cthe puppet media\u201d and at one points barks out \u201c9\/11 was an inside job!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

These vile examples of anti-Semitism weren\u2019t concealed, and took no more than a moderate search online to find. That neither Revlon nor the media covering Al-Khatahtbeh\u2019s rejection of Gal Gadot bothered doing minimum due diligence to accurately report on Al-Khatahtbeh\u2019s views and beliefs is deeply troubling.<\/span><\/p>\n

The implicit assumption here is that honoring a young Muslim woman means embracing stomach-turning extremes of racism, anti-semitism and conspiratorial lunacy. Luckily, in reality, nothing could be further from the truth. The cultural ignorance and condescension displayed by misguided people who honor outspoken bigots as token \u201crepresentatives\u201d of large population groups is both a symptom and a cause of bigotry.<\/span><\/p>\n
