Photo: NDP.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Canada\u2019s third-largest political party will not be voting on a resolution that has been criticized for sanctioning economic warfare against Israel at its national convention in Ottawa this weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Members of the New Democratic Party (NDP) voted against re-prioritizing the \u201cPalestine Resolution\u201d on Friday morning, meaning it is \u201cextremely unlikely to be voted on by the general membership,\u201d the Jewish civil rights group B\u2019nai Brith Canada said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The resolution includes a number of demands targeting Israel \u2014 including an end to the \u201coccupation and settlement program,\u201d as well as the blockade of the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip \u2014 but makes no mention of any Israeli concerns that spurred these policies, such as the sustained threat of Palestinian terrorism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The measure endorses \u201cbanning settlement products from Canadian markets, and using other forms of diplomatic and economic pressure to end the occupation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">It also urges the NDP to oppose \u201cparliamentary efforts to undermine non-violent movements seeking a just resolution,\u201d an apparent reference to the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel, whose leaders have publicly advocated against the Jewish state\u2019s continued existence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Critics have pointed out that the resolution aims to remove language supportive of the two-state solution from NDP\u2019s policy platform, and instead calls for an agreement grounded in UN General Assembly Resolution 194, which supports the \u201cright of return\u201d of first-generation Palestinian refugees and their approximately five million descendants to Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">B\u2019nai Brith Canada launched a mobilization effort aimed at NDP leadership and riding associations prior to the vote, which it said prompted at least 5,000 people to contact the party since Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">While B\u2019nai Brith Canada called Friday\u2019s vote \u201ca massive setback for Canada\u2019s anti-Israel camp,\u201d it expressed concern about other resolutions that may be debated by NDP this weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">These include items \u201cthat purport to condemn the American recognition of Jerusalem as Israel\u2019s capital, urge Canada to unilaterally recognize a Palestinian state, and advocate for a ban on goods produced by Israelis east of the Green Line,\u201d Aidan Fishman, interim national director of B\u2019nai Brith Canada\u2019s League for Human Rights, told The Algemeiner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">He advised \u201cconcerned Canadians to continue to contact NDP leadership on these issues, and for NDP members to continue their activism within the party.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The group Independent Jewish Voices Canada (IJV) \u2014 which supports the BDS campaign and endorsed the \u201cPalestine Resolution\u201d \u2014 blamed the party \u201cestablishment\u201d for the failed vote to reprioritize the resolution and allow it to advance to the convention floor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cDespite obtaining the official support of 26 riding associations in six provinces \u2014 more than any other resolution \u2014 the Palestine Resolution was ranked 37th out of 45 foreign policy resolutions by the Party\u2019s undemocratic prioritization committee,\u201d IJV said in a statement. \u201cWhen the prioritization was challenged at a re-prioritization session on Friday morning, the resolution was voted down by just eleven votes (200-189).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe fervor around this resolution shows the clear split between the party\u2019s grassroots \u2014 especially its younger members \u2014 and the party establishment,\u201d said IJV spokesperson Genevi\u00e8ve Nevin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Young New Democrats \u2014 the wing for NDP members aged 25 and under \u2014 voted unanimously to adopt the \u201cPalestine Resolution\u201d on Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Yet the measure and other resolutions focused on Israel were denounced by mainstream Jewish Canadian groups, including the Canadian Council for Reform Judaism, which represents nearly 900 Jewish congregations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThese resolutions risk alienating many progressive Jewish Canadians \u2014 who have a long history of being active in the NDP, the labour movement and social justice causes \u2014 from the NDP,\u201d the Council warned on Wednesday. \u201cThe vast majority of Jewish Canadians, while diverse in their politics and often critical of particular Israeli policies, feel that a connection to Israel and Israelis is a core part of their identity.
