Photo: courtesy<br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Starting with wheat fields and an almond grove, a full-scale sustainable educational farm now taking root in Israel\u2019s Jezreel Valley will be an international showcase for cutting-edge\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.israel21c.org\/5-israeli-precision-ag-technologies-making-farms-smarter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Israeli technologies in precision agriculture<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, high-yield growth with less water, and preventing soil erosion and infestation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Starting with wheat fields and an almond grove, a full-scale sustainable educational farm now taking root in Israel\u2019s Jezreel Valley will be an international showcase for cutting-edge Israeli technologies in precision agriculture, high-yield growth with less water, and preventing soil erosion and infestation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThis is unique in the world,\u201d says Prof. Hanan Eizenberg of the Neve Ya\u2019ar Research Center, one of three such centers run by the Volcani Institute-Agricultural Research Organization of the Israeli Agriculture Ministry. \u201cYou can\u2019t find a large-scale model farm for precision farming anywhere else.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Plans for the teaching farm were announced today by the Helmsley Charitable Trust, which gave a $4.8 million grant to support development of the 123-acre Neve Ya\u2019ar farm as an innovative, economically viable and environmentally sustainable program to educate farmers and researchers in Israel and worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Staffed by Volcani experts, the model farm will be supported by an on-site laboratory, which will expedite the otherwise lengthy process of applying findings to the field. Trainings, seminars and workshops will be offered on a regular basis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cA lot of model farms fall short because they work with experimental-size fields and you can\u2019t apply the results in the same field,\u201d Volcani International COO Tali Gottlieb explains to ISRAEL21c.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIn a large field you can implement your experiments and use them to scale for the farmers. We\u2019re hoping to encourage farmers to adopt these practices faster because it makes economic sense for them to do so.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Gottlieb said Volcani researchers are considering how to adapt the innovations for different climatic regions across the world. \u201cAgricultural ministers and other officials from abroad will be invited to come and see what we offer,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Additional model farms could be established in other parts of Israel so that visitors could choose the farm with the most similar climate. However, many of the technologies to be implemented at Neve Ya\u2019ar will address universal issues such as problems with fertilizer drift.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cAs urban living areas are encroaching into agricultural areas, people don\u2019t want to smell fertilizer through their windows, so we\u2019re looking at ways to produce fertilizers with fewer chemicals, danger and odor,\u201d Gottlieb says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.israel21c.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/farm-2.jpg\" width=\"100%\" \/><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>http:\/\/miscareaderezistenta.ro\/externe\/lumea-in-care-traim-peste-68-de-milioane-de-oameni-si-au-parasit-caminele-intr-un-singur-an-2017-47069.html<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Wheat and almonds<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Eizenberg, whose area of expertise is weed research and plant pathology, has worked with Neve Ya\u2019ar Research Center Director Zalmen Henkin on planning the farm and hiring technicians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIn November we will plant the first crops,\u201d he tells ISRAEL21c.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The farm will begin with 36 hectares (89 acres) of wheat and 4 hectares (about 10 acres) of almond trees. The field crops will alternate every year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cAlmonds are a super food and generate great interest all over world,\u201d says Eizenberg, \u201cand we have optimal growing conditions for almonds in the Jezreel Valley. Wheat was chosen as our first field crop because it is a very important grain and because we want to demonstrate how we grow high-yield and high-quality wheat in our area.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.israel21c.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/farm-3.jpg\" width=\"100%\" \/><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>Almond trees in Neve Ya\u2019ar, site of the Volcani model farm. Photo: courtesy<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">He anticipates that in the second growing season, after the wheat is well established, the wheat fields will be divided to show the effects of different treatments for nutrition and soil cultivation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Soil erosion is a growing concern in Israel as well as in parts of the world including Australia and Europe. Neve Ya\u2019ar will demonstrate Israeli innovations to keep the soil stable. These include planting specific groundcover crops and using no-till methods that increase water penetration and retention of organic matter and nutrients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWe will also adopt precision agriculture in order to apply pesticides and fertilizer only when needed and where needed,\u201d says Eizenberg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Testing ground<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israel\u2019s precision-ag innovations are sought throughout the world, he adds, citing Chile as one country actively working with the research center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cEuropean scientists want to have a meeting in our model farm in 2020. There are others interested in what we are doing because of the large scale and the Volcani\u2019s well-known research. We expect people from various countries to come and see what we do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In addition, the Neve Ya\u2019ar model farm will be a testing ground for private Israeli ag-tech enterprises developing products ranging from smart irrigation by remote sensing to drones used for monitoring field conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWe will encourage startup companies to validate their technologies in our fields,\u201d says Eizenberg, adding that Volcani founded a precision ag-tech business accelerator in Ramat Yishai, close to Neve Ya\u2019ar, a couple of years ago to support precision-agriculture startups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Sandor Frankel, a trustee of the Helmsley Charitable Trust, tells ISRAEL21c: \u201cHelmsley is excited to partner with the Volcani Institute to support the development of world-class practices in innovative, economically viable, and environmentally sustainable agriculture.
