The Independent<\/em>\u00a0legitimized the warped political views of linguist Noam Chomsky this week in a column by their US editor\u00a0Andrew Buncombe<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0article<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, titled \u201cIsraeli intervention in US elections \u2018vastly overwhelms\u2019 anything Russia has done, claims Noam Chomsky,\u201d highlighted a charge made by the American academic in an interview with the fringe radical left talk show Democracy Now.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the Chomsky quote that was highlighted by the\u00a0Independent<\/em>\u00a0journalist:<\/span><\/p>\n

Israeli intervention in US elections vastly overwhelms anything the Russians may have done, I mean, even to the point where the prime minister of Israel, Netanyahu, goes directly to Congress, without even informing the president, and speaks to Congress, with overwhelming applause, to try to undermine the president\u2019s policies \u2014 what happened with Obama and Netanyahu in 2015.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Buncombe then contextualizes Chomsky\u2019s views by uncritically citing the (widely discredited) views of John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt:<\/span><\/p>\n

The power of the pro-Israel lobby has long been one of the contentious, and disputed, issues\u00a0in Washington. In 2007,\u00a0John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt published\u00a0The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0which described the lobby as \u201cloose coalition of individuals and organisations who actively work to steer US foreign policy in a pro-Israel direction.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The\u00a0ADL\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0others<\/a>\u00a0concluded that the book\u00a0evoked<\/a>\u00a0historically\u00a0toxic narratives<\/a>\u00a0alleging Jewish control of US foreign policy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the authors\u2019 denial that their book was antisemitic, Mearsheimer later\u00a0endorsed<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0a book by Gilad Atzmon characterized by the Community Security Trust as \u201cquite probably the most antisemitic book published in [the UK] in recent years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Moreover, Chomsky\u2019s\u00a0claim that Netanyahu\u2019s address to Congress was worse than Russia\u2019s meddling in the US election is absurd. The Israeli prime minister was trying to use his bully pulpit to convince Congress to vote against the Iran Deal. Russia\u2019s government reportedly engaged in a systematic campaign designed to\u00a0literally swing<\/a>\u00a0a US election, an attempt to undermine America\u2019s democracy that evokes\u00a0the actions<\/a>\u00a0of the KGB in the 1930s.<\/span><\/p>\n

Leaving Chomsky\u2019s convoluted argument aside, the decision by the\u00a0Independent<\/em>\u00a0editor to promote the academic\u2019s charge on Israel\u2019s putative influence on the US political system \u2014 without informing readers of Chomsky\u2019s record of unhinged commentary on a host of other international issues \u2014 is extremely troubling.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chomsky, for starters, has argued that the US is \u201cthe world\u2019s greatest terrorist state,<\/a>\u201d\u00a0praised\u00a0<\/a>the Vietcong<\/a>,\u00a0defended<\/a>\u00a0the genocidal\u00a0Khmer Rouge<\/a>, and expressed\u00a0support for the terror group Hezbollah<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are\u00a0other quotes<\/a>\u00a0from the esteemed radical professor on Jews, Zionism, and Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n

On American Jews:<\/span><\/p>\n

Jews in the US are the most privileged and influential part of the population. \u2026 Privileged people want to make sure they have total control, not just 98% control. That\u2019s why antisemitism is becoming an issue.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

On Zionism:<\/span><\/p>\n

Hitler\u2019s conceptions have struck a responsive chord in current Zionist commentary.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

On Judaism:<\/span><\/p>\n

In the Jewish community, the Orthodox rabbinate imposes its interpretation of religious law. \u2026 Were similar principles to apply to Jews elsewhere, we would not hesitate to condemn this revival of the Nuremberg laws.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Chomsky may be prolific as a linguist, but politically he\u2019s an ideological extremist whose views need not be legitimized and promoted by respectable media outlets.<\/span><\/p>\n
