Photo: Sarah Rogers \/ Algemeiner.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The only child of the late Holocaust survivor and Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel has responded to the antisemitic desecration of his father\u2019s childhood home in\u00a0northwestern Romania over the weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cAntisemitism exists in Europe. This is not an isolated incident,\u201d Elisha Wiesel told\u00a0<em>The Algemeiner<\/em>\u00a0on Sunday. \u201cWhat is happening to my father\u2019s home is a small indication of what is happening on a continental level. Both Holocaust memory and Jews are under attack.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The discovery of the graffiti \u2013 scrawled in bright pink paint\u00a0\u2013\u00a0has prompted an investigation by local authorities, who also condemned the incident.\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/world-news\/europe\/.premium-anti-semitic-graffiti-sprayed-on-home-of-late-author-elie-wiesel-1.6341351\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Among the messages<\/a>daubed<\/strong><\/span> on the small structure in the town of Sighetu Marmatiei was, \u201cNazi Jew lying in hell with Hitler\u201d and \u201cPublic toilet, antisemite pedophile.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In addition to condemning the attack,\u00a0Elisha\u00a0\u2013 who\u00a0serves as chief information officer at Goldman Sachs \u2013 offered some practical steps and called on the Romanian government to add his father\u2019s most famous work, his memoir \u201cNight\u201d \u2013 about his experiences in the Nazi death camp Auschwitz \u2013 as mandatory reading in the country\u2019s national curriculum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">He also called for \u201cmaking sure that the appropriate funding and governance exist so that my father\u2019s home can tell the story it needs to tell: the story of a Jewish family and community that once was, and the story of a man who wanted their voices\u00a0\u2013 and the lessons of their destruction\u2013\u00a0so desperately to be heard.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The younger Wiesel also offered an optimistic take on the incident, saying \u201cthere is room for hope too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cTalk to the young Romanian woman who works day after day curating inside the house, even during the winter when there is no heat supplied to the building,\u201d he said. \u201cHer name is Alina Marincean \u2013 a non-Jew for whom this has been a labor of love. She is deeply committed to my father\u2019s memory and to the Jews of Sighet who were eradicated. Talk to her and be inspired. She knows the timetable of when the ghetto was first created, of when the Sighet transports went to Auschwitz the way my cousins and I do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWhat she is doing deserves far more attention than the scrawled hatred of some drunk thugs. What can be done to help her?\u201d he concluded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In total,\u00a0380,000\u2013400,000 Jews were murdered in Romanian-controlled areas during the Holocaust under Marshal Ion Antonescu, the country\u2019s fascist dictator who was allied with Nazi Germany.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Elie Wiesel and his family were deported in 1944 to Auschwitz. While he and two of his sisters survived, his father, mother and younger sister were murdered there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Until his passing in 2016, Elie Wiesel served as chairman of\u00a0<em>The Algemeiner<\/em>\u2018s advisory board.
