Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel must exercise \u201coverriding\u201d security control of the West Bank in any two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In an interview with CNN, Netanyahu addressed President Donald Trump\u2019s seeming endorsement of the two-state solution during a meeting between the two men on Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIsrael has to have the overriding security,\u201d in any political arrangement with the Palestinians, he said, \u201cnot the UN, not Canadian Mounties, not \u2014 I don\u2019t know \u2014 Austrian or Australian forces \u2014 Israeli forces have to have the security control, otherwise that place will be taken over by Islamist terrorists, either ISIS or Hamas or Iran, all of the above. And that\u2019s my condition.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPeople say, \u2018Was that commensurate with a state?’\u201d he added. \u201cI don\u2019t know, you decide. \u2026 I want the Palestinians to govern themselves, but not to be able to threaten us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve discovered that, if you use labels, you\u2019re not going to get very far because different people mean different things when they say \u2018states.\u2019 So rather than talk about labels, I\u2019d like to talk about substance,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Netanyahu has consistently stood by his demand for Israeli security control over the West Bank for some time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nonetheless, the prime minister said he will examine President Donald Trump\u2019s upcoming peace plan with \u201ca keen and open mind, because I know there\u2019s great friendship to Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe question of what happens, you know, precisely, when he puts it out depends on \u2014 I\u2019ll look at it,\u201d he added. \u201cIn fact, I was \u2014 you know, I always said that I\u2019m willing to look at peace proposals put forward by the United States.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Meeting with Netanyahu on Wednesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Trump told reporters, \u201cI like two-state solution. I like two-state solution. That\u2019s what I think works best. I don\u2019t even have to speak to anybody, that\u2019s my feeling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump had previously stated that he would support whatever solution the Israelis and Palestinians agreed to. Shortly after his Wednesday statement, he appeared to return to this position, saying, \u201cIf the Israelis and the Palestinians want one state, that\u2019s OK with me. If they want two-state, that\u2019s OK with me. I\u2019m happy if they\u2019re happy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Netanyahu faced some domestic friction after Trump\u2019s Wednesday statement, with Education Minister Naftali Bennett, a key member of his government, asserting, \u201cThe president of the US is a true friend of Israel. Nonetheless, it is important to emphasize that a Palestinian state, which would be a disaster for Israel, will not be established as long as we are in the government.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In response, the prime minister reiterated his security demands, saying, \u201cMake no mistake: Israel will not give up on security control west of the Jordan (river) as long as I am prime minister. I think the Americans accept that principle.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
