The signing on Monday of the\u00a0Elie Wiesel Genocide and Atrocities Prevention Act<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0by President Donald Trump was welcomed by the late Holocaust survivor and Nobel laureate\u2019s family.<\/span><\/p>\n

The new law \u2014 passed with bipartisan support \u2014 determines that it is US policy to \u201cregard the prevention of genocide and other atrocity crimes as a core national security interest and a core moral responsibility.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It also mandates the establishment of a Mass Atrocities Task Force to \u201cstrengthen State Department efforts and assist other agency efforts at atrocity prevention and response.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy family and I are deeply moved that my father\u2019s name and life\u2019s mission will be enshrined in this important piece of legislation,\u201d Wiesel\u2019s son, Elisha, told\u00a0The Algemeiner<\/em>on Tuesday. \u201cMy father loved this country and believed in it as a powerful moral force in the world. We are grateful on his behalf to the many in Congress who sponsored and invested in passing this law.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe thought that the prevention of atrocities is in our national interest \u2014 because of what it means for our national character \u2014 is a profound idea indeed,\u201d Elisha Wiesel added. \u201cWe owe it to the dead and the living to call atrocities by name and tilt the balance toward action.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTwenty-five years ago,\u201d he noted, \u201cour country\u2019s leadership studiously avoided using the word genocide to describe what was happening in Rwanda for fear of obligating ourselves to action. But ignoring only serves the enemy. Hitler famously said shortly before invading Poland: \u2018Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhether it is to address a historical wrong by finally recognizing that a genocide took place in Armenia, or by engaging in preventing modern-day atrocities in Myanmar and Syria \u2014 the work now very much lies ahead of us,\u201d Elisha Wiesel concluded.<\/span><\/p>\n
