Long-time readers may recall that five years ago both\u00a0BBC Two\u2019s<\/strong> <\/span>\u2018Newsnight\u2019<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0BBC Radio 4\u2019s \u2018Today\u2019<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0covered a story that was portrayed by the then \u2018Newsnight\u2019 presenter Jeremy Paxman as a \u2018free speech\u2019 issue:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNow a French comedian has managed to short-circuit his country\u2019s professed\u00a0commitment to free speech. President Francois Holland, with support from both Right and Left, today\u00a0encouraged\u00a0local authorities to\u00a0ban\u00a0performances by Dieudonn\u00e9 M\u2019bala-M\u2019bala \u2013 usually known just as \u201cDieudonn\u00e9\u201d. It\u2019s being done on grounds of public order because his alleged\u00a0antisemitism\u00a0has tested to destruction Voltaire\u2019s\u00a0supposed\u00a0belief that \u2018I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.\u2019\u00a0\u201c<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

That \u2018Newsnight\u2019 report included an interview with a man introduced by Paxman as \u201cthe French writer and film-maker Alain Soral\u201d\u00a0and \u201ca close friend of Monsieur Dieudonn\u00e9\u201d who \u201chelped him popularise the infamous quenelle gesture\u201d. BBC audiences were told nothing of Soral\u2019s far-Right affiliations and record of antisemitism before they heard him whitewashing the antisemitism of his \u201cclose friend\u201d by means of antisemitic conspiracy theories.<\/span><\/p>\n

In April 2017 Soral was featured in\u00a0an article<\/a>\u00a0about the French elections on the BBC News website with readers told that \u201cwhat makes him so controversial are the anti-Semitic views he is accused of peddling \u2013 under the guise of \u201canti-Zionism\u201d \u2013 on his hugely successful website\u201d and that:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026on one issue Alain Soral undoubtedly has a point: speech is being policed with increasing zeal in France.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Last week the man the BBC found it appropriate to interview on the subject of antisemitism was\u00a0sentenced<\/a>to a\u00a0year in prison<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cA French court on Thursday sentenced far-right Holocaust denier Alain Soral to one year in prison for insulting a magistrate and making anti-Semitic comments on his website.<\/p>\n

On the site, which is called \u201cEquality and Reconciliation,\u201d Soral wrote that Jews \u201care manipulative, domineering and hateful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Soral, 60, has been convicted multiple times of incitement to hatred over a constant stream of anti-Semitic comments over the years.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

While this\u00a0latest conviction<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0will come as no surprise to those familiar with Soral, five years on it is still unclear how BBC editors could have been so uninformed as to consider the airing of his antisemitic conspiracy theories and whitewashing of the racism of his \u201cclose friend\u201d to be any kind of contribution to audience understanding of antisemitism.<\/span><\/p>\n
