I guess it&#8217;s something that either appeals to you or it doesn&#8217;t. Indeed it is by far the most impressive exhibition of landscape painting that I&#8217;ve seen in the Mall Galleries after many years of visiting.\u00a0 The big Main Gallery can overwhelm wimpy painting and needs bold painting to draw you down the stairs. Bauman&#8217;s larger paintings &#8216;read&#8217; well from 100 feet away and get better as you get closer!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">This is a woman who really knows how to paint big landscapes in an appropriate way &#8211; and how to use mixed media to give a &#8216;grounded&#8217; and spiritual sense of the landscape.\u00a0 Her colour palette is slightly exaggerated and yet remains true to the place. Her tonal values are spot on so that all the zones in terms of distances and changes in landscape read really well &#8211; despite the fact that for many people the New Mexico landscape will be something they&#8217;ve never experienced.<\/span><\/p>\n<table class=\"tr-caption-container\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-sKi39ZYCf5A\/XHjjrcRmgQI\/AAAAAAAAxWU\/ExAp-REU-xY8xuF688BN-0pTrN5IlRSWACLcBGAs\/s1600\/lydia-bauman-mall-wall.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-sKi39ZYCf5A\/XHjjrcRmgQI\/AAAAAAAAxWU\/ExAp-REU-xY8xuF688BN-0pTrN5IlRSWACLcBGAs\/s1600\/lydia-bauman-mall-wall.jpg\" border=\"0\" data-original-width=\"600\" data-original-height=\"337\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"tr-caption\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><b>The road to iconic landscapes of O&#8217;Keeffe Country<\/b><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080; font-family: 'trebuchet ms',sans-serif;\">The story of how the exhibition came about<a style=\"color: #000080;\" name=\"more\"><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The story is that\u00a0<b>Lydia Bauman<\/b>\u00a0visited the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/whats-on\/tate-modern\/exhibition\/georgia-okeeffe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Georgia O&#8217;Keeffe exhibition at Tate Modern<\/a>\u00a0two years ago. Having visited the exhibition, like me, Lydia found O&#8217;Keeffe&#8217;s paintings of landscapes to be extremely stimulating and wanted to find the places in northern New Mexico where she had painted and to reinterpret the landscapes in her own style.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"tr_bq\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><i>In late 2016 I stood amongst her colourful paintings of New Mexico desert at the exhibition\u00a0<\/i><i>\u201cGeorgia O&#8217;Keeffe\u201d in London&#8217;s Tate Modern and I asked myself:<\/i><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><i>to what extent did her paintings represent the true character of that landscape?<\/i><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><i>It was perhaps inevitable for me to eventually travel to the country Georgia O\u2019Keeffe called<\/i><i>\u201cmy backyard\u201d to check it out for myself.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><i>What would it be like to find myself in a landscape so thoroughly appropriated by another,\u00a0<\/i><i>much celebrated artist ?<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><i>What did O\u2019Keeffe respond to, what did she leave out?<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><i>How would our different methods serve the character of the land?<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><i>How important is it to know a place well in order to paint it well?<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Having viewed her website I can see why this sort of project would appeal. She&#8217;s obviously worked on projects in specific places in the past. Her style is to paint large landscape paintings with huge vistas &#8211; plus zones and layers very obviously appeal to her &#8211; as they do to me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Then we get the difference. It launched in July 2018 and was fully funded by the end of the month.
