Philips has been operating in Israel since 1948 and actively invests in and acquires Israeli companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">ISRAEL21c spoke to Royal Philips Chief Innovation and Strategy Officer Jeroen Tas, who will be a keynote speaker at the upcoming <a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"http:\/\/kenes-exhibitions.com\/biomed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>MIXiii-BIOMED<\/strong><\/span><\/a> conference in Tel Aviv next week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"40%\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.israel21c.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/tas-philips.jpeg.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>Royal Philips Chief Innovation and Strategy Officer Jeroen Tas. Photo: courtesy<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What makes Israel so strong in the healthcare technology space?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Tas started by naming the usual Startup Nation suspects: a highly-educated population, a vibrant academic research community and active government promotion of startups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">But Israel has another key advantage, namely a close tie between medical clinicians and high-tech.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israel, Tas explained, is unique in the way that \u201cpeople coming from the medical field are open to applying new technologies\u201d such as artificial intelligence and big data. \u201cWhen these two worlds find each other, that\u2019s when the magic happens,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Tas compared Israel\u2019s innovation ecosystem with that of Silicon Valley. \u201cYou find a lot of strong technology companies\u201d in California, he pointed out, \u201cbut you don\u2019t find a lot of strong clinicians working with that technology.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">It helps that Israeli entrepreneurs in the medical technology space also \u201call speak English and have a highly global outlook on business,\u201d Tas said. \u201cThey know that you don\u2019t develop innovation just for Israel but for the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Tas added that everyone he meets in Israel \u201cunderstands how the healthcare system in the US works and has connections there.\u201d That\u2019s particularly important for Philips, since \u201cthe US is our largest market.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Tas gave the example of American Well, a telemedicine company in which Philips has invested. American Well was started in Boston by Israeli brothers Ido and Roy Schoenberg. Its R&amp;D and business operations are in Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Now, American Well is bringing its telemedicine platform to Israel\u2019s Meuhedet HMO. The deal, which could reach a value of up to $60 million, is the first time the company\u2019s software is being used in Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Innovating for patient needs<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The third element required for success in the burgeoning digital healthcare space, says Tas, is orienting innovation toward a patient\u2019s needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Think of how a diagnosis is made today, he explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIf you wake up tomorrow with chest pain, you may go to your family doctor.\u201d The physician sends you to the hospital for an ultrasound. \u201cAt the hospital, they look at the image and say, you should make an appointment with a cardiologist.\u201d The process can take weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Technological innovation holds out the promise of \u201cshortcutting this process,\u201d Tas said, \u201cby sharing the ultrasound with your family doctor, using artificial intelligence to make a model of your heart, then with a press of a button, you\u2019re connected to a cardiologist \u2013 who might be in Israel or in the US \u2013 who does the diagnosis then and there. The medication is ordered to be picked up an hour later.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Telemedicine and remote monitoring will allow people with chronic illnesses and the elderly \u201cto live at home with less hospitalization,\u201d Tas said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve done studies where remote monitoring results in 60 percent less emergency care, 50 percent lower readmission rates and 30 percent lower cost.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Philips\u2019 latest acquisition in Israel was the healthcare information systems division of CareStream Health, which develops much of its software in Israel.
