Photo: Wikimedia Commons.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Student government representatives at the University of California, Los Angeles, passed a resolution on Tuesday rejecting \u201cmisinformation\u201d against the Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) group \u2014 including claims that it\u00a0promoted antisemitic content, UCLA\u2019s student-run Jewish newspaper\u00a0<em>Ha\u2019Am News<\/em>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/haam.org\/2019\/05\/22\/eight-non-jewish-ucla-student-council-representatives-deny-antisemitism-pass-resolution-arguing-nsjp-targeted-by-false-accusations-of-antisemitism%EF%BB%BF\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/usac.ucla.edu\/documents\/resolutions\/USAC%20Addressing%20Misinformation%20Surrounding%20UCLA's%20Students%20for%20Justice%20in%20Palestine%20Resolution.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">resolution<\/a>\u00a0focused on condemning the\u00a0Canary Mission\u00a0website, which lists students and faculty members that\u00a0promote the\u00a0boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel, as well as materials distributed by the\u00a0David Horowitz Freedom Center against campus groups, including SJP and the Muslim Students Association.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">More controversially to some students, the resolution also\u00a0included language criticizing UCLA Chancellor Gene Block for\u00a0issuing \u201cmarginalizing statements\u201d about SJP \u2014 namely, a 2018 op-ed he published expressing disagreement with the group and\u00a0the BDS campaign that it supported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Block also made claims in the op-ed \u201cthat allude to the content of SJP\u2019s national conference as being anti-Semitic without evidence to support those claims, ostracizing and stigmatizing the conference and attendees,\u201d the resolution maintained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">SJP\u2019s national conference was hosted at UCLA this November, with conference organizers\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2018\/08\/22\/ucla-to-host-student-conference-that-advocates-destruction-of-jewish-self-determination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>calling for<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0Zionism \u2014 a movement that recognizes the Jewish people\u2019s right to national self-determination \u2014 to \u201cbe destroyed.\u201d The group\u2019s\u00a0UCLA\u00a0chapter was involved in the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2018\/05\/23\/pro-israel-ucla-students-to-meet-with-administration-after-anti-zionist-peers-violently-disturb-event\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>forceful disruption<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0of an event held by\u00a0the school\u2019s Students Supporting Israel (SSI) group last May.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe accusations of antisemitism made against SJP came after confirmed speakers to their 2018 national conference had written tweets which asked former President Barack Obama to \u2018just go kill all the Jews\u2019 and others which made jokes about the Holocaust,\u201d\u00a0<em>Ha\u2019Am<\/em>\u00a0noted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Of the nine members of the\u00a0Undergraduate Students Association Council who voted to adopt the resolution on Tuesday, eight did not identify as Jews, according to\u00a0<em>Ha\u2019Am<\/em>. The only dissenting vote was from the Council\u2019s lone Jewish member,\u00a0Tara Steinmetz, who cautioned against \u201cusing the term Zionism to demonize some.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWe had a Jewish student who ran out of class this week sobbing because she was demonized for her own identity,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cSome at the meeting were trying to define Zionism as a dirty word,\u201d Steinmetz explained to\u00a0<em>Ha\u2019Am<\/em>.<i>\u00a0<\/i>\u201cThey use rhetoric that renders them only \u2018okay\u2019 with the small minority of Jews who disavow Israel, ignoring the fact that Israel is quite often an inherent part of many Jewish students\u2019 identities.
