Photo: Reuters \/ Jim Urquhart.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Of the hundreds of demonstrators who showed up on Saturday to counter a white supremacist rally in Dayton, Ohio, some were seen stomping on and attempting to burn the flag of the Jewish state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The rally, held by nine\u00a0members of the Honorable Sacred Knights of Indiana, which is\u00a0affiliated with the Ku Klux Klan, drew\u00a0some 500 to 600 counter-protesters,\u00a0<em>The Dayton Jewish Observer<\/em>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/daytonjewishobserver.org\/2019\/05\/no-violence-or-arrests-at-klan-rally-in-dayton-c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a><\/strong><\/span>. Among the diverse crowd were Antifa activists, faith delegations and members of the New Black Panther Party.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">While the day passed without any reported violence,\u00a0several\u00a0counter-protesters were photographed trying to set an Israeli flag on fire, and \u2014 failing to do so \u2014 ripping and stomping on it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The photos were shared on Facebook by Native American activist Corine Fairbanks, who posted them with the caption, \u201cMore Allies, and Palestinian Relatives, wanting to burn flag- FREE PALESTINE!! Deport the KKK.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; align: center; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fcorinemf68%2Fposts%2F10161897030250594&amp;width=500\" width=\"710\" height=\"680\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Anti-Zionist groups have increasingly attempted to link their cause with social justice movements on the left, and often equate Zionism \u2014 a diverse movement that supports the Jewish people\u2019s right to national self-determination \u2014 with white supremacy and other forms of racism that have historically oppressed Jews.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Jen Mendoza, a member of the Cincinnati Palestine Solidarity Coalition, who was photographed attempting to burn the flag, said \u201cthe incident occurred after she saw three young men with an Israeli flag and entered into what she described as a confusing discussion with them,\u201d The Observer reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cRecognizing the state of Israel as being of the same ideology [as] American capitalist imperialist settler colonialism, and seeing that flag on our side was jolting,\u201d Mendoza recalled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cOne of them said that he was from Israel. And then the other two boys looked Arab,\u201d she continued. \u201cThe other kid, he was the one doing a lot of the talking, he made comments about God giving them the land, and at that point I was like, \u2018Well, you\u2019re on the wrong side of this fence if that\u2019s what you believe.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The boy then said \u201csome extremely Zionist, racist things,\u201d before asking, in an apparent reversal, whether he should stomp on the flag. Mendoza said she\u2019d be happy to set it on fire, she told The Observer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cAnd then he flipped and was like, \u2018Yeah, let\u2019s burn this flag right now,\u2019\u201d Mendoza said. \u201cHe helped tear it apart \u2014 and then he told us that he was doing a social experiment to find out where people really stood on fascism. And then he began chanting, \u2018Free Palestine.&#8217;\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Fairbanks told The Observer that at one point, a young woman asked those vandalizing the flag, \u201cWhat are you? Against Jews?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI remember them [the young men] saying that no, they weren\u2019t against Jews, they wanted Palestine to be free,\u201d said Fairbanks, who argued that the Israeli flag \u201chas nothing to do with Judaism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI\u2019m American Indian,\u201d she said in her comments to The Observer. \u201cTo say I\u2019m against America and the United States government and what they\u2019ve done to indigenous people, yes definitely. So I am in solidarity with indigenous people worldwide. I know there\u2019s a complex history with the indigenous people and what\u2019s happening in Israel, I understand there\u2019s a complexity that\u2019s very different from what\u2019s happening here, but there\u2019s also a lot of commonality between Native American people here and the indigenous people there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">At least one local resident, Sara Stathes, was rattled by the incident with the Israeli flag. \u201cI was shocked to see that,\u201d Stathes told The Observer. \u201cI saw some counterarguments as to why they might have done that, but at the same time it\u2019s totally unacceptable.
