Photo: courtesy<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">An Israeli-British-German study <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00401-019-02023-x\">published<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"text-transform: none; text-indent: 0px; letter-spacing: normal; font-family: 'Supria Sans W01 Regular',helvetica,arial,sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400; word-spacing: 0px; display: inline !important; white-space: normal; orphans: 2; widows: 2; float: none; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: #ffffff;\">&nbsp;<\/span> in Acta Neuropathologica reveals a novel method for detecting the aggregation of the protein alpha-synuclein, a hallmark of Parkinson\u2019s disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Earlier detection could enable more effective treatment for the incurable, progressive neurodegenerative disease affecting the speech, posture, gait, digestion, sleep, impulse control and cognition of an estimated one million Americans and 10 million people worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">By the time a patient is diagnosed with Parkinson\u2019s disease, up to 80 percent of the dopaminergic cells in the substania nigra part of the brain are already dead, possibly due to toxicity resulting from alpha-synuclein aggregation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWe have developed a new method for tracking early stages of aggregation of alpha-synuclein using super-resolution microscopy and advanced analysis,\u201d announced Tel Aviv University Prof. Uri Ashery, co-author of the study and head of TAU\u2019s Sagol School of Neuroscience and Wise Faculty of Life Sciences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cTogether with our collaborators at Cambridge University, who developed a special mouse model for Parkinson\u2019s disease, we were able to detect different stages of the aggregation of this protein. We correlated the aggregation with the deteriorating loss of neuronal activity and deficits in the behavior of the mice,\u201d Ashery explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThis is a significant step forward in the world of Parkinson\u2019s research,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Monitoring treatment effects<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Co-author Dana Bar-On of the Sagol School of Neuroscience said the new early-detection method also can be used to monitor the effects of drugs on alpha-synuclein aggregation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Researchers from TAU and from the Max Planck Institute in Gottingen and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universit\u00e4t M\u00fcnchen were able to illustrate the effect of a specific drug, anle138b, on this protein aggregation and correlated these results with the normalization of the Parkinson\u2019s phenotype in the mice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWe hope that this research can be implemented for use in the early diagnosis of Parkinson\u2019s in patients,\u201d said Bar-On. \u201cWe\u2019re currently working to implement the methods in a minimally invasive manner with Parkinson\u2019s patients.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The scientists are planning to expand their research to family members of Parkinson\u2019s disease patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cBy detecting aggregates using minimally invasive methods in relatives of Parkinson\u2019s disease patients, we can provide early detection and intervention and the opportunity to track and treat the disease before symptoms are even detected,\u201d Ashery said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Ashery has led several other ground-breaking studies on neurological diseases.
