The schism within the British Labour Party over antisemitism deepened on Thursday, as supporters and detractors of the party and its leader Jeremy Corbyn furiously debated the\u00a0previous night\u2019s<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0BBC\u00a0Panorama<\/em>\u00a0program on the continuing crisis of Jew-hatred in Labour\u2019s ranks.<\/span><\/p>\n

One Corbyn supporter dismissed the former Labour staffers who appeared in the program as \u201cwimps\u201d during a live interview with the BBC<\/span><\/p>\n

Wednesday night\u2019s program included the testimony of many Labour members, Jewish and non-Jewish, some of them near tears, describing an atmosphere of intense antisemitism in the party.<\/span><\/p>\n

One member said, \u201cI joined the Labour Party because of my Jewish values\u201d but had \u201cbeen the unfortunate victim of a lot of antisemitism within the Labour party, and stuff I never thought I\u2019d receive in 2019, let alone in the party I thought was anti-racist.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI wouldn\u2019t say to a friend, \u2018Go to a Labour party meeting if you\u2019re Jewish.\u2019 I couldn\u2019t do that to someone I cared about,\u201d she added.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another member said simply, \u201cIt\u2019s been soul-destroying to be a member of the Labour Party and Jewish.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A third said, \u201cThe antisemitic abuse I received was what I was subjected to every single day. Telling me Hitler was right. Telling me Hitler did not go far enough. In Labour party meetings, we\u2019ve seen people engage in Holocaust denial, and that\u2019s terrifying for Jewish members.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI do not think the Labour party is a safe space for Jewish people anymore,\u201d she asserted.<\/span><\/p>\n

But according to one Corbyn supporter speaking to the BBC on Thursday, the former Labour Party staffers who risked legal action by speaking about the mental health issues they suffered because of party\u2019s contemptuous treatment of antisemitism complaints were just \u201ca bunch of wimps.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Sian Rider, who described herself as a Jeremy Corbyn supporter, told the BBC\u2019s\u00a0Victoria Derbyshire\u00a0<\/em>program on Thursday morning that \u201clast night\u2019s [Panorama] program was a bunch of wimps, quite honestly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Rider continued: \u201cI have been attacked in the street for carrying a Palestinian bag and I didn\u2019t have a nervous breakdown, why did they?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Rider\u2019s comments were among the more inflammatory responses on a day that saw Corbyn\u2019s allies continue to deny that Labour has a problem with antisemitism. Rider was strongly criticized\u00a0by Labour MP Stephen Doughty, who pointed out that in the BBC program, Sam Matthews, the party\u2019s former head of disputes, admitted that he had contemplated suicide, such was his despair over the antisemitism scandals that have enveloped Labour since Corbyn became leader in 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cQuite frankly, when somebody spoke out and said that they want to take their own life by throwing themselves off the balcony of the general secretary\u2019s office, to have that lady there call that person a wimp, I think is deeply offensive,\u201d Doughty said.<\/span><\/p>\n

As for the official Labour publicity machine, a party spokesperson told\u00a0Sky News<\/em>that the BBC program had \u201cengaged in deliberate and malicious representations designed to mislead the public.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Labour\u2019s deputy leader Tom Watson \u2014 \u00a0who has repeatedly clashed with Corbyn and the party hierarchy over antisemitism \u2014 called on Thursday for a \u201ccompletely independent process\u201d to investigate complaints of antisemitism, \u201cmade up of people of standing from the Jewish community so that we can start to rebuild trust.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

That brought a furious response from Jennie Formby, the party\u2019s secretary-general \u2014 \u00a0and one of the Labour officials identified by the BBC as compromising the antisemitism complaints process \u2014 who insisted in a letter to Watson that the extent of Labour antisemitism had been exaggerated.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe party has at all levels consistently shown that it recognizes the vital importance of combating antisemitism, yet you consistently use your considerable platform \u00a0to denigrate any progress that has been made, and any individual involved in that,\u201d Formby told Watson.<\/span><\/p>\n

Watson also urged that Labour \u00a0members should be automatically expelled if there is a \u201cprima facie\u201d case of antisemitism to answer \u2014 \u00a0a position also adopted by Sir Keir Starmer, who is leading the party\u2019s efforts over \u201cBrexit,\u201d the UK\u2019s impending departure from the European Union.<\/span><\/p>\n
