The United States on Wednesday imposed sanctions on Iran<\/span>ian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, the US Treasury Department\u2019s Office of Foreign Assets Control said on its website.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Treasury Department said it was imposing sanctions on Zarif for acting on behalf of Iran<\/span>ian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cJavad Zarif implements the reckless agenda of Iran<\/span>\u2019s Supreme Leader, and is the regime\u2019s primary spokesperson around the world,\u201d Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tensions have risen between the United States and Iran <\/span>following US President Donald Trump\u2019s withdrawal last year from a 2015 international nuclear accord with Tehran.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fears of a direct US-Iran<\/span>ian conflict have risen since May with several attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf, Iran<\/span>\u2018s downing of a US surveillance drone, and a plan for US air strikes on Iran <\/span>last month that Trump called off at the last minute.<\/span><\/p>\n
