US President Donald Trump on Sunday responded to reports that House Democrats\u00a0may retaliate<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0against American and Israeli diplomats in response to Israel’s decision to ban Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) from entering the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

The comments follow a\u00a0McClatchy<\/em>\u00a0news report claiming that a group of Democrats, including Jewish members, met on Friday morning to discuss how to convey a \u201cdeep lack of confidence and trust\u201d in Israel\u2019s ambassador to Washington Ron Dermer, and the US ambassador to Israel David Friedman, in the wake of\u00a0Israel\u2019s decision<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0to ban Omar and Tlaib.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Israel\u2019s decision to ban Tlaib and Omar came shortly after\u00a0Trump wrote on<\/strong> Twitter<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>that Israel \u201cwould show great weakness\u201d if it let in the two congresswomen.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, while some accused Israel of caving to pressure from Trump on the matter, Israel\u2019s ambassador to the US, Ron Dermer,\u00a0later clarified<\/a>\u00a0that Trump had nothing to do with the decision.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe were not pressured by the Trump administration to do this and this is a sovereign decision that Israel has to make,\u201d Dermer said in a phone call with US Jewish leaders, explaining the decision was motivated by the fact that the two Muslim lawmakers support BDS.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe leadership of our country believes that this visit was designed solely with the intention of promoting BDS and they were gonna use this visit as platform to BDS activities,\u201d the ambassador said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump recently came under fire for his criticism on Twitter of Tlaib, Omar and two other Democratic congresswomen, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY) and Ayanna Pressley (MA<\/span><\/p>\n

The President wrote<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0that the four women, whom he did not mention by name, should “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump reiterated<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0his criticism a day later, calling on the congresswomen to apologize to the US, to Israel, and to the \u201coffice of the presidency.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The House of Representatives later\u00a0voted to condemn Trump\u2019s remarks<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0as racist, with four Republicans and an Independent joining the Democrats in their rebuke of the president.<\/span><\/p>\n
