The United States on Tuesday announced\u00a0sanctions\u00a0<\/span>on a \u201cwide range of terrorists and their supporters,\u201d including the Palestinian group Hamas and Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, on the eve of the 18th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n

The targets include 15 leaders, individuals and entities affiliated with groups such as Hamas, al Qaeda, Islamic State and Iran\u2019s IRGC, the US Treasury Department said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0sanctions\u00a0<\/span>were applied using new tools from an executive order recently updated by President Donald Trump.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSince the horrific attacks of 9\/11, the US government has refocused its counterterrorism efforts to constantly adapt to emerging threats,\u201d Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in the statement.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Trump\u2019s modernized counterterrorism Executive Order enhances the authorities we use to target the finances of terror groups and their leaders to ensure they are as robust as possible,\u201d Mnuchin said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sanctioned leaders include Turkey-based Zaher Jabarin, the head of Hamas\u2019s financial office; and Muhammad Sa\u2019id Izadi, the chief of the IRGC-Quds Force\u2019s Palestinian office in Lebanon.<\/span><\/p>\n

The targets also included a Brazil-based al Qaeda member, a Maldivian national who recruits for the Islamic State branch active in Afghanistan, and an operative of the Islamic State affiliate in the Philippines, the statement said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Several exchange houses, and a jewelry company in southern Turkey, were also designated by the Treasury.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0sanctions\u00a0<\/span>mean any property the targets may have in the United States would be blocked and US persons would generally be prohibited from having business dealings with them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Israeli Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz tweeted, \u201cI welcome the decision of the United States of America to put additional sanctions on the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hamas, ISIS and Al-Qaeda. This is the right way to stop the Terror-State of Iran and its proxies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
