Photo: Wikimedia Commons.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Some of the most telling stories are the ones The New York Times doesn\u2019t print.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In that category falls the recent decision of a section of the American Political Science Association to reject a resolution calling for a boycott of Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Miriam Elman, a political scientist on leave from Syracuse University who is the executive director of the Academic Engagement Network, which opposes boycotts of Israel, wrote a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/miriam.elman.9\/posts\/903998746635264\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Facebook post<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0reporting, \u201cThe proponents of a discriminatory anti-Israel academic boycott resolution (and its accompanying obnoxious FAQ) experienced a colossal defeat.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">She wrote, \u201cThis spectacular fail needs to be advertised WIDELY, as we all know that BDS zealots will either try to bury it or spin this as some kind of remarkable victory\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cBury it\u201d was precisely the approach\u00a0<em>The New York Times<\/em>\u00a0took to the news.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2019\/07\/28\/is-bds-anti-semitic-the-new-york-times-inquires\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>lengthy\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0examination<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0in July of the movement to boycott, divest, and sanction Israel reported, \u201cThe idea has significant support, and may be gaining ground\u201d and noted \u201cvotes by two faculty groups last year \u2014 the Association for Asian American Studies and the larger American Studies Association \u2014 for limited boycotts of Israeli academia.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">While\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0readers were informed of the votes\u00a0<em>for<\/em>\u00a0boycotting Israel by two faculty groups, the subsequent decision by the political scientists\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0to boycott Israel was not reported by the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">There\u2019s a structural bias to journalism encapsulated in the old newsroom saying, \u201cwrite about the hotel that\u2019s burning down, not the hotel that didn\u2019t burn down.\u201d So to some degree the decision by\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0editors to emphasize the boycott votes that pass rather than the ones that fail may be driven by a general desire to focus on news that does happen rather than news that doesn\u2019t happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">But that\u2019s the most generous possible face to put on what operates functionally as an anti-Israel bias. It\u2019s hard to imagine the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0would have skipped the American Political Science Association story entirely if the BDS resolution had\u00a0<em>succeeded<\/em>. It ends up being a double standard. It leaves\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0readers a false impression that BDS \u201cmay be gaining ground,\u201d when a more accurate impression is that it may be losing ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>Ira Stoll was managing editor of\u00a0<\/em>The Forward<em>\u00a0and North American editor of\u00a0<\/em>The Jerusalem Post<em>.
